I have in school 2 DC's, these are old and full of problems, so I have bought a new server for the school. What I want to do is install a new Server new name etc, the have 2 DC to replace the old servers I will not replicate the servers but copy over users computers etc. So my question is how?

I have created a new forest on the 2012 server with a name xxx.int, so now I want to add DC1 and DC2 but I cant figure how to do this there seems to be no option for add DC to exsisting forest etc. Please help kind people.

so you want to create a new domain but import the old domains users/computers just not its policies?

if so I think there is a migration kit from ms (or at least was) never used it though

you cant add a dc to a new domain/forest without demoting it which would lose the accounts on the pc

computer startup script via group policy (of the old domain) to join the computers to the new domain

something like this

if exist "%SYSTEMROOT%\Temp\MigrateDomain.txt" goto FileExists

NETDOM /Domain:MYDOMAIN /user:adminuser /password:apassword MEMBER . /JOINDOMAIN

echo FRED > "%SYSTEMROOT%\Temp\MigrateDomain.txt"

shutdown -f -r -t 0

:FileExists

tbh you don't really need all the bit about checking the fileexists

migration tool is useful in migrating certain aspect of the system. However if you want to add the old DCs to a existing forest then you must de-promoted both the old DCs.

Ok I have now installed Server 2012, I have installed Hyper-v and setup and replicated a 2003 DC. Is there anyway of testing the new server before I dcpromo the old one for good so to speak.

The school is still running off the old server, but the new 2012 DC seems to have replicated over users computers etc. I need to see if I can login to the new server and drive mapping is ok and programs run.
