Hi all,

We are considering buying tablets for PE staff to replace their laptops, so needs to run SIMS.net, office and hold their files.

Is anyone aware of a tablet that:

  • runs full Windows 8 pro
  • has a vga port for connection to projectors (or comes with correct adaptor lead)
  • 4Gb RAM
  • At least 32Gb of storage space
  • Teacher proof - In the past they have dropped, spilt, and lost power supplies etc for their current laptops. So it should be easy to get replaceable parts, have a warranty or low cost to replace.

Has anyone found such a product, that ticks most of these requirements? I know being teacher proof is a bit impossible,

Had a look at surface pro, but is quite expensive and there appears to be no discount available on it. Also had a look at Dell, Acer and Asus

Teacher proof, and PE teacher proof, are sadly different.

We got an Acer Iconia W700 for PE. Nice wrap around case/keyboard, tough aluminium body, not too many spill holes for coffee/protein shakes. The glass screen will always be vulnerable, but the system specs hit your requirements and the price is excellent.

We've used iPads and then a Citrix Xenapp solution using 3G connections. Bought those tough cases. worked a treat.

Depends on your budget realistically

iPads are decent enough with citrix on them, but then comes the added time to have all apps approved etc and locking them down so additional crap cannot be purchased on the school account etc.

Acer Iconia is also good as they are really quite tough to destroy.

We went to an IT sales exhibition this morning and there was a bloke from HP showing off the ElitePad which runs full Windows 8 Professional. It doesn't have 4gb of ram, it only has 2gb, but can have upto 64gb storage on an built in SSD and then has an expandable memory slot to increase even further.

It is military tested, apparently. Which he demonstrated by dropping the pad screen first onto the hard floor and appeared to be OK when he picked it up. It also has Gorilla Glass, and the screen can be removed using a demagnetising machine as the screen is held on using electromagnets.

Looked like a very nice tablet and I was rather impressed at it operating speed on Windows 8 Professional.

why drop a screen onto the floor...I can drop my phone from my bedroom window to the floor, if it lands flat it won't break. Drop something ON the screen from waist height and it doesn't break, it would be a good test.

Another one for the W700. We have bought them for our PE department. They seem to be very good. It comes with a micro HDMI to VGA adapter to connect to a projector. We also have them in the IT Support office. I like it because you can have full version of office on it. I think it will be nice when windows 8.1 is released.

Hi,

I've now got a W700 to try. Problem is it only comes with Windows 8 not Pro. When I try to change it to the KMS key, it says this key won't work. Same with a MAK Pro Key.

I've tried the add features and cmd methods.

Do I have to re-install the whole of windows to make it the pro edition?
