Arthur Posted June 26, 2013 Author Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) 8.1 preview supposed to be out today isn't it? Been periodically Googling but not spotted it yet... The link is not active yet, but you'll be able to download it from the URL below later today... prev.windows.microsoft.com/en-001/windows-8/preview-download windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/download-preview Edited June 26, 2013 by Arthur 1
Arthur Posted June 26, 2013 Author Posted June 26, 2013 the preview is now live but I can't get on lol If you have a TechNet subscription, it's much faster downloading it through that. http://i.imgur.com/w5LkEmI.png
LosOjos Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) That link from earlier doesn't seem to work (quite possibly due to bandwidth!), but if you already have Windows 8 and are just looking to upgrade to 8.1 you can do so here: Download Windows 8.1 Preview - Microsoft Windows EDIT: The link keeps downloading the RT version on my machine (I'm running W8 x64) Edited June 26, 2013 by LosOjos
Arthur Posted June 26, 2013 Author Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) The link keeps downloading the RT version on my machine Windows8-RT-KB2849636-x64.msu? If you install that update, you should be able to download the 8.1 Preview through the Windows Store after you have rebooted (although it's probably not a good idea to do that on your home PC). It doesn't look like the ISO files are available through your link yet. http://i.imgur.com/M6GaDB2.png Edited June 26, 2013 by Arthur

Yeah, it seems there are lots of people having issues if they are using the en-gb version of W8 or have Media Center - I have both There's a fix floating around online that involves manually installing the update package (which simply enables you to download 8.1 from the Store app) using DISM, but it doesn't work. It does add the option to the Store, but it won't download. Looks like I'll just have to be patient!
Arthur Posted June 26, 2013 Author Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) I've got 8.1 up-and-running in a VM using the ISO from TechNet. I'm not going to risk installing it on a real PC just yet. http://i.imgur.com/pBQ7uWR.png http://i.imgur.com/qpqQI7X.png http://i.imgur.com/7s5iTuM.jpg Edited June 26, 2013 by Arthur
LosOjos Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 First impressions? I'm too poor for TechNet lol, I'll have to wait until the update tool is fixed
Devontechie Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Think I will be waiting for the ISO to be available before I install it and I will then install is on a VM to see and not on my W8 Pro laptop
LosOjos Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 For those that are interested, here's the loveliness you can expect if you try installing the update via DISM:
mattx Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 The only thing 2008R2 added to printing was headaches! Going to 64bit didn't help. NT -> 2000 -> 2003 we had no problems at all with printers. 2008 was a nightmare. And 5 years on I still have problems with 64 bit printing. If it does not install first time then its 'BAM' IP printer for you using the 64 bit driver installed locally.
LosOjos Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 So, it seem Microsoft have shunned GB with this preview, we're not on the supported language list so we can't install it. The official line is to wait for the ISO and install the US version, though this will mean losing any apps we already have installed. Nice one M$! Well done! ¬_¬

Tried technet last night downloaded 800mb then stopped but the iso works as says its a 3.4gb dvd (i left it overnight my internet at home sux) got 2012r2 in a vm like the boot screen fish lol

Yeah it's not the end of the world just irritating because it rules out the store update option for my test environment now so I have to wait for the ISO #FirstWorldProblem I found it interesting actually that they've gone with update via Store rather than WSUS, backs up the theory that they're going the Apple route of regular purchased updates to the OS Another thought just came to mind: can you push/withhold Store updates like you can WSUS or is this going to be another W8 "feature" we have to find a workaround for? Modey Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Downloaded it via Technet this morning. The interface is still as shockingly sh**e as it was before, or so it seems. Not had a chance to have a proper play yet.
Devontechie Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Wonder how long it will be before the ISO is available to download....
DrCheese Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 There's already copies of it floating around (The .iso) was put on TechNet last night anyway.
Devontechie Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 There's already copies of it floating around (The .iso) was put on TechNet last night anyway. I haven't got access to TechNet!
sted Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 I haven't got access to TechNet! and technets pro the link that says wait seems to be enterprise
Modey Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 and technets pro the link that says wait seems to be enterprise It wasn't obvious where to download it from within Technet at first. But if you go to the main home page, then click on Subscriber Downloads, it's then obvious where to grab it. It's listed as Windows Client 8.1 Preview NEW!
