Why have M$ decided to make the server 2012 o/s look like a phone?

I found it quaint that they have a ModemLogs directory. I haven't seen a modem attached to a server for years. Come to think of it, I haven't seen a modem in use for years!

Which makes no sense. The resources required to drive a GUI is practically nothing. I could understand removing the GUI in the 80s/90s but not now.

Indeed. AOL makes most of its money from dial-up subscribers (almost $160 million!). Without them, they would probably go bankrupt.

I've seen one suggestion of publishing various admin tools as remoteapps, and then accessing them from the start menu of a windows 7 host, but it's just more minutes wasted when all your trying to do is be productive from the get-go.

right, so how does that work with administering the new features in windows 2012 ? Which is presumably the main reason for having windows 2012 instances over tried

I think most schools will still run Server 2012 with a GUI, however for web applications it would be better to use Server Core.

Use the RSAT tools from your desktop. I hard ever log into a server. I personally dont understand why people always log into the server to perform basic tasks instead of using remote consoles.

because they may be in an emergency, where some toby thought it was funny to put windows 3.11 on their desktop. or they might not be at their desk,

 

I wasn't suggesting it for day to day management.

 

RDP is hideously insecure, cain does a excellent job of sniffing password given microsofts encryption choices.
