This is one for those that use it.

 

I have used PCounter for a long time and more familiar with it but we also install and configure Papercut for users and there is a small bug that lets Papercut down over PCounter and that is hidden queues.

 

In PCounter you can have a print queue you publish to everyone and then use a rule/registry mod to move it to a hidden queue and then the MFD's pick up from that, this is where PaperCut fails and it leads to more installs of PCounter as its one feature larger places need for security and governance reasons.

 

There is a script you can run in PaperCut to hide job names but this is no good, need something the same as PCounter if anyone can assist.

 

We have or are in the process of flagging this up but thought I would see if anyone else has come across it and solved it yet.

What exactly is the problem? Papercut has ACLs so I don't see why you would need to hide a printer?

I don't want to hide a printer just don't want other people to be able to view the print queue and see what is been printed i.e. AManager prints job called Microsoft Word - JBloggsDisaplinaryLetter.docx other people would be able to see that and when working in certain areas there are governance issues.

 

May have a fix for it but need to try it later.

So hiding job names would actually solve that then, would it not? You can specify what to name the jobs I believe. I've just called ours Hidden.

Yeah there is a script to hide job names but when you go to release them on PaperCut you don't know what they are you are releasing or deleting.

 

PCounter is great because you can move to hidden queues its the only thing PaperCut lacks, and PaperCut is a more modern and well developed program from experience of using both its just lacking a small feature!

If print names was actually an issue (surely just don't put sensitive info in doc names?) - just make a virtual printer queue for each user...

It appears there is no official way to do this at present but a development request has been accepted by PaperCut and they have marked it high priority and have moved it up the queue over some others they have in.

 

Will post more when I know.

When you say release, do you run release stations? Surely any jobs showing in the list should be released and users should know what they are?

Release from the MFD as we are using FollowMe printing.

The print jobs can happily be hidden and when viewed at a MFD they will be the normal names.
