Publishing Syllabus to students

My Head of IT has a great idea: Provide Y10 and Y12 with Sillabii on credit card sized CD.

 

The initial drive for this idea came from a suggestion to do it this way rather than supply a full paper copy to every student. Great, but it still seems damn inneficient - and not cheap: we have to buy 250 @ 80p each plus sleeves.

 

Just wondering if anyone has a good solution/ alternate suggestion. We have free [as in already paid for centraly] web hosting so it could go there for starters. The bulk of it is in PDF format with an html frontend anyway.

Hmm, just remember that small cds are only compatible with certain cd/dvd drives. I'm sure they are quite capable of destroying slot loading drives (my mac mini has a big warning about this). As far as I am aware a number of standard drives and laptop drives also have this limitation. Faster drives are likely do dislike actual credit card shapes the most due to the high velocity of the cdrom and its not being round causing it to be unbalanced.

You could just use regular size CDs - cheaper and less likely to destroy the CD drives.

 

Even cheaper, would just be to publish it as a PDF on your website.

Why use CDs?

 

If you have a web site or even a shared area - can't you publish it there?

or as alt if dont want to use website or cds how about buying some cheap mem sticks and put on them...

Numbers: 250 CD's every year.

 

They know about the price comparisons with regular CDs : 10p vs 90p - seems an outrageous waste to me - i'd imagine most kids never use them anyway. This was justified on cost saving from a full printout for every student. No idea why this suddenly came into force last year.

 

I wrote to the Head of IT suggesting the web idea, which he's into. He recons this year we can run both paralell then put case forward next year, for Web primarily, then backup paper and CD systems. Should save a few bob!
