This is a good one,

 

Boss has agreed to move everyone over to Linux but slowly,

 

So I was wondering if there is anyway that I could do this centrally, sounds impossible to me.

 

Does anyone know how I can create a partition and drop a linux image onto the "new" partition?.

 

 

I realise I can probably do this via imaging, however I'm running WDS and not sure how I can do this. If I created the new partition on my test machine how do I capture the Drives and then have those drives deployed via a re-image ?, I could also do this via PXE boot possibly, Does anyone know how I could PXE Boot a Linux image from booting WDS ?

I don't think you're going to be able to continue using WDS if you're going to be deploying Linux. Clonezilla is more suited to the task, as it is designed to work with Linux partitions etc.. You can also image individual partitions etc... (ie. do exactly what you want to do).

Would FOG be of any use or more suitable ? Not sure if it would support Linux ?

It has rudimentary support for Linux, but not much effort has been put into its support - even though Fog runs on Linux itself, its mainly a Windows system. Clonezilla is much more suited.

OK could I do this another way, could I install Linux on the machines hard drives, and then boot Linux, but on the login screen have a button that will send them to A Windows session on a remote server ?

You won't have a button per-se, but you could have it as an icon on their linux desktop - the icon would launch a FreeRDP session connecting to your RDS server(s).

 

Either that, or you could custom craft a 'Session Type' for XServer which when they login they can choose from the little menu, which would auto launch the window - however, they'd be prompted to login again, which might be incongruous, compared to them actively choosing to open it like an application.

Not a bad idea with RDP, I have just checked my licensing status and Server 2012 I have 10 RDS CALS. I may just build all the machines to Linux and have an RDP Session into Server 2012.

It is possible to get WDS PXE booting Linux. But I think fog would be more appropriate.

I've always just used TAR for this - partition and format your harddrive as you wish, then simply un-TAR a copy of your Linux distribution into the appropriate partitions (you'll probably need one per partition). This has always worked just fine for Debian, other systems may vary. Don't forget to install the boot loader (probably GRUB) afterwards.
