HELP!!! New core switch required in Birmingham TODAY

What a morning!!

 

Our switch room has basically become a sauna over night and our core switch has overheated an died. It's a 48 port gigabit 3Com monster. We've cooled it, and the room down, but it's not working and we need a new one ASAP.

 

Is there anyone on here that can recommend a switch and/or supplier that's local to us in Birmingham that we could go to and pick up a new switch. They'd need to be able to accept a school order as we wouldn't be paying in cash.

 

We have a budget of about £4k and need a switch that can deal with about 15 servers, 25 switches with approx 250 PCs connected, a Cisco router and firewall and a wireless network of ~100 mobile devices.

 

3Com or HP preferred but we are open to recommendations. Internet access is limited to a tethered 3G phone, so don't have much scope for extensive research. Solid recommendations and phone numbers would be brilliant.

Joking aside, top top customer service. Got it all sorted despite us not having an account setup, nor the means to email any info over! Can't grumble at same day delivery on a switch that most places don't even carry in stock.

Now its sorted can I ask what happened in your switch room? What sort of temperature control did you have in place and what failed? What can we learn from your misfortune?

We used to have two constantly open windows and some fans - which sounds awful but had been adequate for the 10 years I've been here!

 

We are in the middle of a huge window replacement project and the builders had removed the old windows and boarded them up with insulated blocks, despite our meetings and agreed plans with them to keep air flowing into the room. Typically we had just asked our electrician for a quote for aheat extractor system to be installed, but a couple of warm days and it became a sauna. We had 3 switches go in total but have been able to jig things around to get everything back up and running.

 

The builders have kindly removed the boarding and will foot the bill for the replacement hardware.
