I have read about the DeployAnywhere aspect of Ghost ;

 

DeployAnywhere technology creates hardware-independent imaging.

 

Is this the same as what MDT does?

Looks like it's made by Symantec so could be expensive, at least MDT you can use for free.

Its new functionality in Ghost Solution Suite 2.5. We have it already but not used yet. Just wondered if anyone had used it and could confirm that it provides the same functionality as MDT in the ability to create just one image which is hardware independent.

The problem with DeployAnywhere is that it will only inject Network and Storage drivers into an image during a deployment, meaning the idea of a Hardware-agnostic image is still far off if you just rely on that. However - and I know nothing beyond what i've read about on the Symantec forums, it is apparently possible to get Sysprep to inject other drivers during that stage from an alternative source other than the Windows driver database on the image.

 

To me, it sounds rather complicated to set up (not that I know how to) and until DeployAnywhere is updated to allow injection of other device drivers (if ever) then you'd probably be better off sticking with MDT.

We've used FOG for about 18 months and it works much better than our previous solution, Ghost.

Yep, Symantec have a pretty good rep for buying up smaller companies or products then running them into the ground...

I thought this was going to happen (end of life for ghost) as I've read a post some on Symantec website a while ago saying the developers had been disbanded from the project. the best feature I found of ghost was auto ghost one button click and a remove was refreshed and renamed back to how they were. just hope Microsoft can add that feature to Windows Deployment Services.
