MCX Randomly Ignored

I've had an ongoing issue this year where student MacBooks randomly decide to ignore our managed preferences. Typically logging out will fix it, but sometimes the student will have to get me to log into the local admin account to run mcxrefresh. Occasionally, even this fails, and I just keep going through the loop of reboot, login, mcxrefresh, logout until it finally decides to work. Authentication continues to work fine thru the process. Any advice / pointers?

 

Fwiw, our clients are on 10.8.2, server is 10.7.5, and it's an OD-only network. DNS is functioning as it should be, and our domain is .private.

Are they mobile accounts?

 

Why you look in /Library/Managed Preferences do you see all the preferences there? There will likely be user (in their username folder) and computer preferences
