Hi All,

Anybody using this got any heads up's, gimme's, gotcha's etc.

Don't know anything about it, but a teacher has been given the go ahead to start using it in her class and it's found its way to my desk.

You can edit deployment settings in Scratch.ini, e.g. home drive, visible drives, proxy settings. Have that in the same folder as the MSI and it will be referenced automatically.

Other than that, easy peasy, never had any problems with it.

Not as far as I am aware, just stick it on a shared drive and way you go. Think java may be required if you want to host the finished games online although I could be wrong.

We use it in both my schools - they both run a Scratch Club, in one case with the help of a STEMNET ambassador, and it just works

OK, thanks for all the replies.

But I'm obviously having a bit of a mental block.

Set-up a shared drive on the server, downloaded the installer, ran it.... and it installed to the C:\ drive of the server!

Not really where I wanted it (but couldn't see anywhere to change the destination drive). :confused:

This is from the installation guide:

'It's possible to install a single copy of Scratch on a shared network drive if desired.'

But it doesn't say how!

Anybody got some idiot proof installation guidance? I'm obviously in need of it today :p

Hi

Scratch - Imagine, Program, Share

Ignore the link for scratchinstaller1.4.exe and instead download the zip file just under it.

Unzip the file to any shared folder of your choice then unzip the msi file into the same folder, move the scratch.ini file to the same folder as the .exe file and edit to suite your needs, point everyone at scratch.exe and that's about it.

My scratch.ini file is as follows

[Global]

DeferUpdate=1

ShowConsole=0

DynamicConsole=0

ReduceCPUUsage=0

ReduceCPUInBackground=0

3ButtonMouse=0

1ButtonMouse=0

UseDirectSound=1

PriorityBoost=1

B3DXUsesOpenGL=1

CaseSensitiveFileMode=0

EnableAltF4Quit=0

Home=R:\

VisibleDrives=R:,q:,o:,e:

ProxyServer=proxy.xxx.wilts.sch.uk

ProxyPort=8080

Language=en

Hope that helps

Andrew

Many thanks, all a bit clearer now.

Had a bit of trouble understanding unzip/extract MSI thing, as I'm not used to dealing with those.

Googled up extract MSI, then the CMD for msiexec (then Googled up the reason it wouldn't extract - extracting to the same folder as the MSI is a no-no apparently :confused: ). I've heard 7-Zip or similar can do it?

Now I need to open up a scratch image file, which is in the extracted MSI folder, so I need to make sure the little darlings can see that.

There is an error message when I open it, 'attemp to index non-existent element in an ordered coll' clicking on proceed gives me 'Message not understood: withblankstrimmed'...

Love the 'it's easy' reputation this has.... As always, 'it's easy' (WHEN YOU KNOW HOW!).

You don't need to unzip the MSI - there's a ZIP file on the Scratch download site that has everything you need.

Hmmmm... Just going by the links I was given. This is all I got in the 'For network deployments, use the Scratch1.4.msi.installer.zip' download.' :confused:

Huh - they used to have a flat ZIP file up. My apologies. The MSI there is for network deployment i.e. pushing out by GPO.

I suspect that you could use the .EXE download to install to a shared location and then just provide a shortcut to the EXE in that share; if not, use the MSI from that zip file in a Software Assignment Group Policy and change the settings in the INI file to control how the MSI installs. So long as the INI is in the same directory as the MSI, it will apply those settings.

No apologies needed! They have obviously 'improved' their download section lol :p Unfortunately, I'm a bit lacking in GPO skillz :( but I've got the .EXE extracted and chucked it on a share with the modified .INI with AJWhite1970's help (vintage year by the way ;) ). So just needed to make a desktop shortcut in the students profile and work out what the errors mean...

Just install it on any computer then treat the c:\program files (or x86) \Scratch folder as the unzipped folder and copy it your network share.

Or of course, just install it on all the clients - the network share option is just useful is playing with the Scratch.ini file but of ocurse you get all the downsides of running progs over a network so YMMV :)

This.

Works.

No errors :D.

Home drives mapped, all others hidden. Nice one. Glad I had 5 minutes spare to do this today lol! :p

Morning all,

Quick question. What would stop the ini file being copied to the workstation on install? I've edited the config file, tested it, and placed it in same folder within msi deployment folder and set it to install via gpo. It installs scratch no problem but when I look in program Files\scratch on local machine it hasn't copied the config file across. If I log on to a client without Scratch, navigate to the msi folder with installer and config file and run the installer it installs correctly and copies the config file across with no issues?!

Any thoughts?

Thanks

At the moment the off line version of Scratch 2 is experimental so even if you got it working it could be changed over night.

If you follow the threads in the main scratch forum then there are some ideas on how to get it going
