Win7 - Desktop no longer accessible through IE8 upload/explorer

Found today that for some reason Internet Explorer 8 (running on Win 7 - 64bit) suddenly doesn't like accessing my c:\users\[user]\desktop folder and comes up with error: "[path]" is not accessible. The direct name is invalid"

 

Yet, I can use explorer to access the Desktop folder, I can use the exact same site on Firefox (ver 19.0.2) and have no problems whatsoever.

 

About the only thing I can think that's changed is that a bunch of AutoUpdates were applied when I booted up this morning so I'm guessing there's some kind of security update that has restricted access to IE8 or similar but can't conclusively prove either way.

 

 

All resources pertaining to the error indicate disk corruption, Group policy setting or ACL's but as yet I can't find anything that might hint at the issue...

 

 

If I find anything else I'll post back but if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears...

Not sure if it's possible or even helpful, but I would seriously look at getting IE9 onto the network, at least. I've (hopefully) been through the headache of getting IE10 on 7 working (no IEM any more), IE9 is easier. For security and functionality, you really should look into moving away from IE8. Its HTML5 capability is laughable too.

Appreciate the reply even if it wasn't quite what I'd hoped for...

 

Unfortunately at present I'm locked into IE8 due to a specific add-on that isn't forward compatible so until I've finished some work to make the add-on redundant I'm a little stuck. Bit odd though and wondering if it has anything to do with the recent Winupdate hiccup but so far nothing critical to worry about...

Not had a huge amount of time to diagnose anything hence the forum post to check if I was alone or not, but good idea... I'll see what I can break out..
