I need a recommendation for an external storage device to meet the following needs:

1. Must be very quiet as it is to be used in a studio environment.

2. 1TB+ storage capacity.

3. Must be able to be read\write by both Mac and PC.

4. Price is not an issue.

5. Must be quite portable as it will be moved around offices\locations.

6. Reliable!!

Couldn't you buy a 1tb sata disk, such as http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/129306

And then just put it into an external usb enclosure, such as http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/124166

I've never used either of those devices before, but would have thought having only have one disk would make it both quieter and more portable. That enclosure is described as "low noise without fan" on the manufacturers website, no idea about mac compatability though.

Lacie drives are very good. We have a 2TB one we use for various things at work. It was going to form part of thebackup system, but that never got implemented.

Only critisisms we have of the one we have is because it's based on an array of disks, it takes a long time to spinup and initialise (up to 2 minutes) and if you re-start the machine with the drive connetced it doesn't always work until you cycle the power on the drive.

Last Lacie drive I had became a doorstop, useless piece of junk, maybe I just got 3 duds on the trot but it tarnished my view of them for life.
