anyone used something like this?

Stuff-UK - SFPC1110 - StarTech RJ45 Gigabit Copper SFP Transceiver Module Mini-GBIC 100m

need to go from 2xsmoothwall UTM 1000s into the 2xcore switch(s) which is extreme x670s (48 x 10GB/1GB SFP+)

obviously there is also the powered kind, but of course I would like to avoid a non rackmountable box and a wall wart if i can.

So you've got 2 x smoothwall utm's with gigabit copper ports on them and you have core switches which need a transceiver to present a gig copper port to the smoothwalls?

In that case sure no problem using a module to provide that.

Wether that particular module is compatible you'll have to double check.

Well you asked if anyone had used something like it and yes I've used similar.

what brand was it?

and has it been reliable?

is it an all in one like i linked or a external box?

hthanks

I've had a whole load of problems with genuine Netgear Gbics. Started buying cheap ones for £12 from China - and not had any failures or RX/TX errors. I even use cheap XFP and SFP+ modules now - no problems whatsoever - and you can afford to have a box a spares (although I've not needed them)
