Frazer Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Has anyone noticed poor performance recently? Im consistantly getting 20-40Mbit out of a possible 100Mbit during the day, after 4pm im seeing closer to 80Mbit, still not maximum but much better, On the whole webpages are sluggish to load. Poulton area, Lancashire. Anyone else find this?
AceDaz Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Hi Yeah we have the same problem, we get (according to Speedtest.net) between 10MBit and 30MBit out of a (apparently) 100Mbit uncontended Fibre connected line to Preston via Virgin Media equipment. We are based in Chorley.
sarchs Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Hi We also are having the same problem. I did a speedtest today and got 20mbit download. The performance over the last month has been really poor. I believe they have had a lots of DOS attacks
Frazer Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 Worse today. 10-20Mb down, 3-15Mb up (including school traffic)
Frazer Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 Two tests today: 80Mb down 49Mb up 55Mb down 66Mb up Ran within a few minutes of each other, still quite poor considering its easter break.
AceDaz Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 What were you all getting before? varied completely and randomly, but usually about 50 - 90 during quiet times and 20-30 during a normal school day. Frazer, is that the sae as you?
Frazer Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 Its not about being fast enough, its supposed to be 1:1 100mbit/100mbit, during the school day I've seen around 20-50mbit at most. Thats less than 50%! Cant even achieve full speeds when most of the network is inactive during the holidays.

Frazer Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 (edited) Broadband : Comparison Chart - not quite an SLA but it does state 1:1. I just wanted to get a feel from other schools in the Lancashire area on how theirs was performing (CLEO schools). Ive a feeling its more to do with the Lancsngfl proxy/filtering rather than the available local bandwidth. http://www.speedtest.net/result/2638399010.png http://www.speedtest.net/result/2638400936.png http://www.speedtest.net/result/2638403255.png Edited April 11, 2013 by Frazer
AceDaz Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I get that as well, and I'm not talking about the average joe blogs website I'm talking about Microsoft and even web servers on our local intranet - provided by our LEA
CyberNerd Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Ive a feeling its more to do with the Lancsngfl proxy/filtering rather than the available local bandwidth. Do you run any local filtering? It's the first step towards getting a decent non-LEA provided connection. If you have it in place already just ask them for a non filtered connection and try it out.
Frazer Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 We have Microsoft TMG so have the ability to filter, however I dont think there is an unfiltered connection on offer at the moment (we'd still have to go via their proxy server farm), I think they were investigating it last time I asked.

Put in a change request to open a port to the internet from your TMG and see if it helps. If it does then problem solved, if it doesn't or they deny the request then change provider. It's a free market.
Frazer Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 I realise the options available, but if we can see theres a big enough problem within CLEO schools, hopefully they will address it. We have our website/moodle/antivirus licence/email tied in to the same provider, so its a lot of services to change over if we leave them. Theres also the increase in cost as we get a good deal. We are looking at it, but for now Id like to see if we can improve the existing service.
CyberNerd Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 ... as we get a good deal. Not sure about that!. but yes it does seem the best starting point to improve the service! It may be that they are unaware of the issue. Do you get graphing details of your endpoint router. The first place to look is if it is under too much load. Our LA steadily provided more bandwidth to schools, but forgot to upgrade the router from an old Cisco that wouldn't exceed more than 40Mb/s
Frazer Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 No we dont get anything useful like that! I think its a Cisco Catalyst 3550 - Id imagine thats not a problem.
Frazer Posted April 16, 2013 Author Posted April 16, 2013 40/40 today http://www.speedtest.net/result/2648999162.png
ChrisH Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 On the same sort of subject how are people finding their connection to their Moodle ? Ours seem to be very slow with a lot of issues logging in sometimes and it's not because they are using the wrong password.

I think it's horrendously slow and I am putting pressure on to move away, but it will be a slow process.
