Backup solution for Google Apps

We are starting to use Google Apps within our organisation.

I was wondering what if any backup solution people are using to backup their Google Apps Data?

 

Are Google able to retrieve data that has been accidentally deleted?

 

I see there are various solutions available.

Hi, I'm currently having a look at Google Vault but have noticed it doesn't seem to be a backup solution as such. It's more for email retention policies etc. I believe it's worth having but am looking at something to potentially backup all apps data such as sites, drive, emails etc.

 

The best one I have found is way to expensive for us even with edu discount.

 

Is anyone backing up Google Apps data currently, or just emails?

I know that this post is a few months old but did you ever get anywhere with backups for Google Apps?

 

Management at my school are wanting to press ahead with putting some mission critical stuff on Google and I have told them we need to sort out some form of backup (student document collaboration is one thing but I think this needs much more thought).

 

I've had quotes from the likes of Backupify and Spanning but they seem mighty expensive!

Just thought I would try the free one but I get a an error about not being able to connect to the licence server. I will try from home later.

At the moment we are only really utilising mail from Apps so therefore vault it is for us.

 

At a later date I will reconsider options and who knows, vault might do it all by then.

As you put in another post Vault does not appear to be a full email backup system and even if it was would you want to put all your eggs in one basket. I may be very OTT but the point as far as I can see is to protect your emails should the Google system get hacked or they lose your data, with vault also being a Google you may (although very very unlikely) lose everything.

We started using Spanning Backup this school year, it backs up the emails every morning but does not keep a daily backup for those, just keeps that days backups. However, for Google Docs, Sites, and contacts it keeps a running daily backup so you can go in at anytime and for any day and restore anything you need. We have not needed it much yet, thankfully but I did have to restore the contacts for our Superintendent which worked perfectly. It is a paid solution but it really does give piece of mind and for only around $3,000, though we are a smaller school.

Vault includes drive. It's currently 8.90 per staff and free for students. However I believe it's going to be free shortly.

My understanding of Vault for Drive is that is does back-up curent files, but if a user deletes a file then it goes from Vault as well. Also, when a user is deleted their Vault data (including emails) is deleted also.

I need to have a play but on the users page you can restore data from a particular date, or range of dates in both gmail and drive.

You can restore data from up to 25 days ago, so it could be useful but is not a real backup solution.

We are going to try creating a 'master' google account and then install drive on our server as the root directory for all files. We should be able to share users home folders etc using google share, so users get individual areas like home folders and I get to backup all the user files as normal using our onsite server backup. The beauty of this is a user can add or change files either through Google's drive services or the old fashioned way of mapped network drives as they are all the same files and folders.

I decided it would be best to create a test network and set up a server with data files etc. I then installed drive and moved everything into the drive folder, re mapping shared drives etc. All worked fine, I was able to share folders out to my pretend staff using google from my 'master account', and was also able to make changes to the same files and folders but from a standard Windows share.

 

That's as far as I have got as I have some other projects on atm and also a bit nervous about doing this on a real network, but in theory it does seem doable.
