PowerPoint files saving as TMP without warning

Hello all.

 

I'm currently having an issue where PowerPoint files are saving as TMP files rather than PPTX, I'm are not sure what could be causing this to happen.

 

It doesn't appear to happen at any particular time and we get about 45 per 1 hour period spread across the whole hour but only during lessons.

It happens from several rooms across the school (all based off the same image however).

It has affected staff and students but much less for the staff.

 

Our setup is the following;

 

Windows server 2008 R2 (for student areas)

Windows Server 2003 SP2 (for teaching staff areas)

Sun Microsystems San 7210 (for support staff areas)

Windows 7 X64 SP1

Office 2007

 

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Immediate thoughts are my documents redirected to a location where the user doesn't have full control?

Format convertor getting in the way (but I would expect that more with 2003) - is it installed by mistake?

Could also try giving users on a couple of machines local administrator access - to rule out an over zelous security policy messing things up.

 

These intermittant issues are a serious pain to track down - you have my sympathy!

Users have full control to their user area's.

 

When you say format converter do you mean the office 2007 compatibility pack? if so its not installed.

 

Ill try and find a few students that I could try with local admin and see what happens.

Yeah I was thinking the gadget that lets office 2003 open 2007+ file types - that sometimes does funny things if it's on a system where it's not needed and it's just the sort of thing that I'd put in a GPO and forget about!

Is the problem just with PowerPoint point files or other file types as well? Are you using offline files? If so you should check that it is working properly on all client machines.

This is caused by known bugs in Office/Offline Files/SMB/TCPIP and the kernel for Windows 7 SP1. Hotfixes are available to rectify this.

 

Install all the updates listed in the following articles:

Most are appropriate for server and clients, though not all components are in play on the servers.

 

Also make sure that the latest office cumulative updates are installed. (though for powerpoint, as long as you've got MS11-094 installed you are running the latest binary)
