Internet Explorer 10 released for Windows 7

So, Microsoft have finally released IE10 for Windows 7 (and 2008 R2).You can get it now at Internet Explorer - Microsoft Windows or wait a few weeks and it'll appear in Windows Update.

 

Also, if you don't use WSUS or SCCM (or similar) for controlling your updates, and you don't want to deploy IE10, you can use the blocker tool to stop its ingress into your network http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36512

 

Also, you need to make sure the following updates are installed before installing IE10 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2818833?wa=wsignin1.0

I'd love not to have to worry about keeping up with Adobe's updates...

 

It's definitely been a redeeming feature of Win 8 for me.

On Windows 7, Flash will not be embedded. Instead, it will use the same ActiveX plugin as Internet Explorer 9 did. Updates will have to be installed using Adobe's updater, not Microsoft's.

No to either of them. Only video support is H.264. Its HTML5 support is somewhat laughable with a score of 320 on html5test.com compared to 463 for Chrome (out of 500).

I'd personally be too afraid to contemlate deploying it on a network just now. I've found so many pages on Windows8/IE10 that still dont display properly on my home computer.

 

Definitely getting blocked for the moment on WSUS.

Huh? No he isn't. Mpeg-4 and webm are perfectly standard. No video formats were originally specified in the HTML5 spec, but the consideration for it was that it should be an open and free standard which all browsers could implement without IP issues. So, they updated the spec to cover Ogg Theora, and then removed it again.

 

Opera, Chrome, and Mozilla all support webm and theora. Chrome also supports mpeg4.

By non-standard I meant not embedding the videos in a webpage so that the browser itself can determine which format(s) to play automatically (as opposed to requiring the end-user to choose betwen MP4 and WEBM and actually know what a WEBM file is). See previous thread here.

At this stage in WSUD how do I set about Blocking IE10? Ours is currently set to Automatically apply all Security & Critical updates and I fear that MS are shortly going to be sending out IE10 under this heading and I can't find anywhere to specify not deploying it?

I found out the KB number for IE10 for win7 x64bit(2718695) - imported it into WSUS via the Windows Catalog and then left it as "not approved" for "all computers".
