Question about SAN, is this possible

We are looking to implement SAN/D2D2T/Vservers in the school soon, plus we have an aged Apple X-Serve which the raid card is dying. Now the x-serve has only really been a overpriced shiny file server, but what I would like to do is partition part of the SAN off for our Apple stations for time machine etc. Would this be possible with different file formats etc?

 

Any ideas on this would be most welcome

Yes, easily on any decent SAN as the disks can be broken down into logical disks.

Thanks Rob, next question is that if I partition of a slice of SAN so that the disk will be in extended journal format, would backup exec still back up the whole SAN, or would I still need a secondary Apple based back up solution i.e. BRU backup to cater for the Apple partition?

I would suspect you would install the Backup Exec Linux or Apple Agent on the Apple Server and then select that to be backed up. You can't backup network shares with BE.

Take a look at Open-E and custom build you SAN for Storage (you will get a lot more TB for you £). You can then divvy it up and also have an NFS/SMB share the machines can directly connect to.
