Ric_ Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 As most people will be aware, EduGeek is SLOW. We believe that the primary reason for this is the fact that the database is sat on a shared database server. We now have a dedicated server that will be used for the new version of EduGeek.net (code-named Secundus). This server isn't doing too much at the moment so we are going to move the current EduGeek database to it in an attempt to speed up our site. The new version of EduGeek.net will also use a different CMS (that doesn't use as many database calls to render the pages). A new interim wiki will appear soon too. Unfortunately, the database move does mean that there will be some downtime. I expect this to either be as soon as I get the chance... we cannot afford to waste much more time I'm afraid.

Most people do migrations in the wee small hours of the morning The thing is that our site is very active late at night/early in the morning for some reason... the best time seems to be 6pm-8pm. I also like to sleep occasionally and given the amount of time that the backup will take. Russ also needs the site active after 10pm to show some Ausie guy.

Ric_ Posted July 19, 2007 Author Posted July 19, 2007 OK... had a bit of 'fun' moving the database - problems backing up and then the forum block off the front page killed the site (hence why it is currently missing). During all the fun, Fasthosts FTP disappeared too!!! Anyway... everything else seems OK now and hopefully the speed issues will be gone
