Domino Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 It's all because of flaming Sense....I don't know why they don't just offer an optional, sense-less upgrade. That said, yet another good reason to root and put a custom ROM on ;-)

It's not that I'm not capable of rotting and putting a new rom on my phone, I just have my phone setup how I want it and don't really fancy having to do it all again. I'd much prefer the updates to occur through a normal system update. Is 2.3 plus the new sense UI worth flashing or might it be worth waiting?

To be honest, it's the non-Sense ROMs that really worth rooting for - CyanogenMOD for instance

JJonas Posted June 16, 2011 Author Posted June 16, 2011 I tried LEE Droid and NeoPhyTe but for some reason they got stuck on the HTC boot screen and at the moment I dont know why, think it might be something to do with partitions sizes on my memory card. Currently running Cool-AceS-v6 (Sense ROM) which is nice as it uses my memory card for app storage so I now have loads of apps on my phone. Want to try a Sense 2.1/3.0 mix but I think they all need s-off and/or custom hboots. If anyone knows of a Sense 2.1/3.0 mix that doesn't let me know the name.

Have you tried anything other than Sense on Android? I really don't think it's all that great myself... you get a rounded (mostly useless) taskbar, a better than stock keyboard (though there are much better ones available on the market) and some nice widgets (granted, probably the best widgets I've seen for what they do) - at the cost of performance.

It's not surprising though as Google have been trying to kill it off for the last few months and I reckon they make the newer updates deliberately awkward to bolt the additional UI onto

If custom ROMs; which are usually developed by less than a handful of people, quite often an individual; can be released within days of the latest code becoming available from Google, why can't HTC and their team of commercial developers do the same? The problem lies with HTC, not Google. What else is there that does the same sort of thing? Sense is really just a launcher app - search the market for "launcher" and you'll see there are many options, not to mention that there is actually one built in to Android that you can't access when Sense is installed (HTC's fault again, not Google's). LauncherPRO is my favorite, ADW.Launcher is very popular too and actually included with a lot of ROMs

There are Sense Roms: Lee Droid, NeoPhyte and CoolAces which I already mentioned, there are others. One of the nice things I have found with running custom ROMS is I can reflash any time I fancy something different. Im staying with Sense because I like some of its features - most specifically Friendstream, I know there are replacements for this, Seesmic, Kammas status updater but in my opinion they are not as good.

I have heard that too, although I must admit it hasn't flowed through to custom Sense based ROMs yet - however CyanogenMOD has supported proxy for months now, and you can put whatever launcher you want on top of it.. except Sense... The reason is that hardware vendors embed their launchers in to the ROM, enabling them to control system wide settings (and also quite often to stop you from using any other Launcher - Sense for instance keeps reverting back to default even if you set another launcher as default). Custom Sense ROMs do not have that limit.

JJonas Posted June 17, 2011 Author Posted June 17, 2011 This was after first installing had done a reboot and it locked at the HTC screen, left it for about 30 minutes, still at HTC screen so used my recovery to restore previous ROM. I dont think there are any menus loaded at that stage. Was wondering if it didnt like my SD partitions. How did you partition your SD card?

Domino got me onto CyanogenMod CM6 and I liked a lot of the features (such as cramming more icons on my home screen and ability to use a proxy without having to shout into the phone ) Once I'd repartioned it using AlphaRev, you get a ton of room for apps without having to mess around with ext3 on your sd card. I moved on CM7 but due to bugs with GPS and the fact that the CyanogenMod team have moved onto getting Android 2.3.4 out and have stopped bug fixing CM7.0.3, I moved back to CM6 which does eveything I want/need. Simon
