I bet your SMT don't use Edugeek! So you should be safe! I highly recommend two monitors for Discover! Drop your graphs on one screen and create your Venn on the second. Magic! However, you can use it on a single monitor and future releases are hoping to address issues such as zooming the graphs and clicking to grid. Edited March 16, 2011 by Sivadam
matt40k Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 Got it running on my laptop, completely standalone with a large secondary school database, non-tweaked. Bit slow in places. Laptop is a C2D 2.4GHz, 3GB, Mobile Intel GMA 4500MHD. To be honest, having SQL2008 installed isn't helping, nor is the dieing HDD Key point, it's working

When you install it, it installs to program files\sims\, I hate when they do stuff like program files\solus3... ok really it should be program files\capita\solus3, but legacy means it should be program files\sims\solus3. Yes, I know, sad, but I like my logic!!

NorthernSands Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 During the installation it does ask which instance to attach the Discover DB, and considering it uses local Windows user accounts to access SIMS (as a trusted SIMS account), I would hazard a guess that you can install the DB into a different instance. Which will be a real plus for those who use SQL Express. Don't know if DBAttach is used or not. Don't know about access levels yet (haven't looked).

You can install the Discover database on another server\instance. I believe if you install two SQL2008 Express instances, you still end up with 1GB RAM for the data (+ a bit for the SQL overhead), not 1GB per instance. The following user roles can specify and amend the General Settings page in the Discover SIMS Configuration utility: Senior Management Team members School Administrators Administration Assistants System Managers. The following user roles can initiate the Transfer process from the Discover SIMS Configuration utility: Senior Management Team members School Administrators Administration Assistants Assessment Coordinators System Managers. The following user roles can add and amend aspects, result sets and Assessment graph parameters in the Selected Aspects, Selected Result Sets and Assessment Graphs pages in the Discover SIMS Configuration utility: Senior Management Team members Assessment Coordinators

I'm pretty sure it's a per instance limitation for the Express version. Each instance, up to 16 per server, can use 1CPU [thread], 1GB RAM and 4GB Storage. Not that MS tell you this.

It doesn't say what windows permissions the local users that it tells you to create should have... I have them as just users. Like the new search bar function...the drop down is from the 90s but it works a treat

The only thing that asks for a login (when it's all up and running) is if I launch Discover from outside SIMS. Then it's just the SIMS UN & PW. Edited March 22, 2011 by NorthernSands Typo!

This is assuming that it passes it's testing. There has been a good uptake of the SIMS Discover Beta with 120 downloads. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people that are currently testing the Beta version for us. A full set of documentation will be available with the release and we have produced a Discover FAQ document. The FAQ document is available now on Resource Number 17846.
