That is a massive valuation, but that said, they're one of the most successful games on the market. They've sold 54m copies of minecraft over all platforms, and the number is increasing. Not to mention they have made massive sales from the DLC on the xbox and playstation platforms, and the customisations available. They also make a fortune on the servers for the game.

 

In short, they're exceedingly lucrative, and MS buying them now, was a bargain as they could have gone for much much more.

Hope they don't end support for Linux hosted private servers - though does explain why I've not been able to download CraftBukkit lately..

Its an interesting pairing again. It could go either way - it could really accelerate the improvements in Minecraft, or it could kill it.

 

I totally understand the reasons for the sale though. Notch was never a public person. You could tell every time he had to say something publicly he seemed ill at ease. He's earned his cash and his privacy I reckon.

Well although I don't play the game, maybe Microsoft will spend some improving the graphics - they are a bit rubbish 😉

All eyes on Mojang now. The world is going to want to know what Microsoft does to Minecraft and if MS are smart, they will know this and keep interference to a minimum. The real point of interest will be what game does Mojang release next with full MS backing?

I really want minecraft for my school, but we can't pay for it without the company being a county approved supplier. Hopefully that will soon change

I know. I'm actually an approved supplier because I get invoice paid from another school I support in the LEA, but the bursar here wasn't confident about it because I wasn't on some list. I was happy to spend the £150 on buying it... but whatevs.

I haven't played vanilla Minecraft in a long, long time, and I don't play much Minecraft anymore in general. Few hours a week, really. But it's clear I'm not the target audience Microsoft are looking to capture. It's the kiddies they want. An entire generation of gamers that near-good-as obsess over this game. That's what they want.
