mrstrong Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 (edited) Strange issue on several chromebooks: they login ok but can't access google classroom. Background: for some reason classroom didn't always show up under the 9 dots google apps (top right on new tab) so I added a bookmark for them to https://classroom.google.com/ Seemed to work ok but now for several kids the bookmark just re-directs them to https://edu.google.com/intl/en-GB/workspace-for-education/classroom/ Then a pop up appears and takes them to UK site (link as above with en-GB now ALL_uk) At top right of this page there is an option to sign in to google classroom but when I try that it says "addition of more Google accounts is disabled" so far tried: reboot chromebook, clear all browsing data, reset settings edit: not just classroom, same for other google apps like drive so it;s like they've signed in to chromebook but google chrome is not signed in Edited September 30, 2022 by mrstrong
j224 Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 I've had a similar issue with some staff accounts on ChromeOS Flex machines. They login ok and then sometimes when going to any of the Google Apps, it shows a window to prompt them to login again. Haven't got to the bottom of it yet!
jthompson Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 Could it be multiple Google accounts signed in? As in the in-page Google account switching? Also, for a bookmark to Google Classroom, instead of classroom.google.com, try using: https://accounts.google.com/signin/v2/identifier?service=classroom&passive=1209600&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fclassroom.google.com%2Fu%2F0%2Fh&followup=https%3A%2F%2Fclassroom.google.com%2Fu%2F0%2Fh&flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=ServiceLogin To prepopulate your school's domain in the sign in box, append this to that URL: &hd=yourschooldomain.net 1
mrstrong Posted September 30, 2022 Author Posted September 30, 2022 Could it be multiple Google accounts signed in? As in the in-page Google account switching? you mean when you click your profile picture top right next to 3 dots and you can switch profiles ? Kids don't seem to have that option. Thats one hell of a bookmark / URL ! Can I ask where it came from / how it "works" Anyway will give it a go thanks
jthompson Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 you mean when you click your profile picture top right next to 3 dots and you can switch profiles ? Kids don't seem to have that option. Thats one hell of a bookmark / URL ! Can I ask where it came from / how it "works" Anyway will give it a go thanks I wasn't meaning Chrome profiles, I was meaning multiple Google accounts signed in on the web, so clicking on the account badge within the webpage and having more than one account listed to switch between. Can't remember how I arrived at that long URL exactly, but with a bit of wrangling you can get equivalent ones that will work for Keep, Docs, Sheets, etc. I remember wanting to get bookmarks for different Google services that would either go directly to the web app if signed in, or to a sign-in page with the school domain pre-filled (rather than via a product promo page like Classroom does) that then does go on to the web app. 1
mrstrong Posted September 30, 2022 Author Posted September 30, 2022 just added that link as a bookmark (under Devices->Chrome->Settings->Users and Browsers then select pupils OU and add under Managed bookmarks) and reloaded policies ok to push it out but just get the message: "addition of more Google accounts is disabled" maybe time for a powerwash ?
jthompson Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 Sounds like additional Google accounts are signed in. Do you see any additional accounts listed when you click on your Google account menu in page?
mrstrong Posted September 30, 2022 Author Posted September 30, 2022 just powered that chromebook off, logged in and now working , even with just https://classroom.google.com/ I definitely powered if off earlier today. Now on the new tab page on the upper right I have "Images", the "9 dot waffle", and account circle you can click, is that what you meant by "click on your Google account menu in page" When it wasn't working that account circle wasn't there suggesting it wasn't signed in ? We've had 5 or 6 of these this week. Wondering if its a wifi / connectivity issue e.g. maybe just lets you login to chromebook using cached credentials. I've also had quite a few that seem to connect to wifi but then say something like (can't remember exactly) "network unavailable" and take you away from sign in page to a page showing list of wireless networks. Maybe they are connected issues. Oh well nearly home time, will see what monday brings.
Sanchez Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 We get this every now and again, clearing the profiles from the admin console sorts it out. I think it's some sort of profile corruption but never had the chance to investigate properly. 1
Scorpio Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 Having similar / same issues with the Chromebooks constantly popping up "before you continue to Google" every time the browser is opened, and you click accept and close the Chrome Browser and it pops up again, if you type Gmail.com in the top the top right changes to the users name, then when you close the browser the pop up asking to accept appears again and top right shows sign in? Anyone got to the bottom of this, Ive powerwashed the device and it does it for new users too. ChromeOS is updated, i've powered on and off the device. Cheers S
jthompson Posted October 14, 2022 Posted October 14, 2022 If your affected users don't have the Search And Assistant app enabled in Admin > Apps > Additional Google services, then they can't be signed in on Google Search pages, even if they're signed into their Google account across all the other apps. That's why the "before you continue" pop-up displays when they first load Google Search, and also why they don't appear as signed in on Google Search but are signed in on Gmail, etc. If that message is reappearing with a new browser window, it suggests that the user's session is perhaps missing some cookie or other. Might be worth testing via a mobile hotspot, free of any local filtering? 2

Scorpio Posted October 14, 2022 Posted October 14, 2022 That's worked, thank you all so much, that must have been a recent change. Google loves to change everything every day... Nightmare! Cheers S
jthompson Posted October 14, 2022 Posted October 14, 2022 Check that within that Search and Assistant app that you've got the Google Assistant and Voice and Face Match options turned off. They probably will be by default, but worth a check. This was a fairly recent change by Google, and I think you might need consent to turn the app on for under-18s. We have it turned off for our students, but they're only getting that "before you can continue" splash once per session, so not annoying in the way that others are finding.
