    Exploding CD

I was setting up a PC, when it gave out a loud bang and I lunged for the off switch. Turning it back on again, it seemed OK, though when I opened the CD drawer the disk had been reduced to shrapnel. After removing the drive and shaking it vigorously over the bin for a while to clear out all the bits, I plugged it back in, and it now seems fine.

I'm often surprised how robust electronics can be. CDs are still as useless as ever though.

A few years back RM sent out a mod kit to prevent exploding CDs being fired out of the drive at great speed.

I've certainly had a CD fired out at an astonishing rate as it ejected from the tray still spinning at ludicrous speed. It was in one piece until it hit the wall behind me, narrowly avoiding turning me into a eunuch.

Loads of stuff on the web:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/11/bu...ed3_.html?_r=1

On a slow day we deliberately put cracked CDs into drives to see if we could get them to explode.....and they did......

I used to have a slot loading Pioneer DVD/CD drive and once it shattered a CD and the shrapnel was released towards my friend and I at high speed. Outrageous!

Those were great. I think we only bothered with the stickers in the end & not the little shield things.
