Can you see who used a Chromebook last

Is there a way to see who used a Chromebook last that I am missing? If I have to setup some kind of third party system to monitor it I will but seems overkill.

 

Just wondered if there is a report in Google admin I am missing as to me seeing the last few users should just be built in?

Hi Robjduk,

 

log into Admin console-click on device-Chrome devices-Select a device

Look at the custom field for the last user.

I believe the success of this or the previous post does rely on 'Erase All Data' not being set when a user logs off.

Thank you. I dont have last user in my custom fields.

Its odd because if you choose not to erase all local user data on logoff it populates the logon screen with endless user account names.

Btw, if you don't already have GAM setup you should install GAMADV-XTD3 instead to avoid having to migrate in 3 months time.

Are you looking below custom fields as within that heading or below that entire section?

It is within the system activity and troubleshooting section, first row second column titled recent users. Big red arrow.

If nothing is populated there I doubt gam will tell you anything.

Agreed. Wanted to check this myself, but currently between jobs so no access to an admin console! I'm thinking about pursuing Google Certified Trainer as I believe you get a Sandbox-type account.

Hi,

I have the recent users section but its blank for every chromebook. I do have the "delete data on logoff" setting which I guess is the cause but seem to remember it made the login page a mess if you didnt do that. Going to grab my test Chromebook and do some testing.

Seems things have changed and now I have removed the "erase user data on logoff" setting, reporting who last used the device works.

To fix the logon screen mess go to device settings and find sign in screen.

Set it to Never show usernames and photos.

This will force everyone to type username / password every time, and retain profiles if you have changed the other setting.

Also there is a great extension for sheets called chromeinventory or chromebookinventory

 

It exports all your device data to the Google sheet you are in. In there you'll be able to see the fields that have the last users of the device.

 

If you want you can also easily edit fields like asset id to add your asset tag number and upload the changes to the admin console all within a Google sheet.

Just be careful using third party extensions with a gsuite admin account as google do not vet/test/assure the quality/security/data protection credentials of these extensions.
