Oddly enough no specifics have been mentioned at this point. There is one specific area they want to monitor (kids climbing on the roof at weekends) so I'd have thought a couple of cameras initially but obviously you want scope to add more. As far as costs are concerned I suspect the school are thinking hundreds rather than thousands. That was my thinking behind the original post, because if the only way to do it is to get a company in and spend the money, I'd rather not get involved.

Apologies if this is in the wrong place. One of my schools - middle school, fairly large site but without a lot of money to spend - has asked me about getting a CCTV system up and running. A previous technician set up something but it was defunct before I got involved. There are some IP cameras still dotted around the building - not connected to anything - but instead of a DVR they had a Windows PC located in the server room. I think someone's got it into their head that I could resurrect the existing cameras and build my own server. As interesting as that would be, I don't think it would be a good idea. Bringing in a professional outfit and having them install a managed system is deemed too expensive, but has anybody out there had any joy with an off-the-shelf system from someone like Swann? The caretaker has seen Swann systems on Screwfix and is keen on something similar. I don't want to dismiss that out of hand but I also don't want to end up with them buying something unsuitable and then me spending ages trying to make it work. Cheers.

I've seen this quite frequently. We tell the users to press CTRL+ALT+DEL, sign it and log back in again and 99% of the time that fixes the problem. Still haven't got to the bottom of it though.

Apologies if this has been posted before. I'm looking into whether a piece of software - basically an exe with some associated files that runs from a network share without having to be installed - can be made to work on a Chromebook. Obviously the preferred solution would be to replace it with something web-based, and I'm thinking the answer is it can't be done without spending lots of money, but I'd like to rule it out. I'm thinking some kind of RDS setup, possibly hosted in Azure. I wouldn't expect the performance would be all that great with 30+ kids using it simultaneously. Anyone else been asked the same thing?

You wouldn't believe the amount of non-standard and non-documents stuff I've found. I work for an MSP so at least I have people I can call and an onsite techie who goes way above and beyond to get stuff working.

Morning everybody. Took over a new high school recently, absolutely zero documentation. Dug out a trolley full of iPad 3s that hadn't been used for years, plus a few 2012 MacBook Pros. Decided to set up Apple Configurator and get the iPads in use, so I attempted to enrol the school in Apple School Manager. Received an email from Apple saying "....School is already enrolled in Apple School Manager. Contact your institution’s Administrator for more information". Trouble is I am the administrator, and I have literally no idea whose email address was used for the signup process. Asked Apple for assistance but all they did was tell me to call a US-based helpline. Anyone else found themselves in this situation?

I say that a lot to be fair. And you get to feel pleased with yourself when you eventually get something to work.

I've also spent ages trying to get this to work but I've only got so far. At one school where I have AD synced O365 and SSO (so the store and suchlike sign users in automatically) I tried to run OneDrive.exe as my user to set it up, but the folder wasn't in %localappdata%\Microsoft, so I copied it from the administrator's profile folder. Ran that and it signed me in and set itself up, but then didn't like me moving to another PC, because when I did the same thing it complained that the OneDrive folder couldn't be found in my local profile and made me sign in again. Why do Microsoft make things so difficult?

I've come to the conclusion that we're trying to solve the wrong problem - they expect a brand new CTouch to behave just a projector connected using a VGA splitter and it just doesn't work like that. So I'm trying to educate them to use Presenter Mode but it's easier said than done...

A fair point. It runs on an ancient version of Access and uses custom scripts and macros, so if it ever breaks fixing it will be a nightmare.

A Friday afternoon problem... Recently started at a high school where the previous network manager implemented some quirky systems. One of them was a Daily Notices system. Basically staff log on to an intranet page and type whatever information they want to be distributed round the school (reminders about show rehearsals, that kind of thing) which gets stored in an Access Database, then exported to a PDF, then emailed to all staff every morning. Quite clever really as it needs no human intervention whatsoever but we want to retire the server it lives on next year so we're looking for a way to replicate it, ideally in Office 365. Obviously we could use Forms, Sharepoint announcements or just a simple shared document but staff like receiving it as an email. I'm also thinking if we can replace it with something web-based we may be able to have it displayed on digital signage when we update that next year. Somebody out there must have implemented something similar.

In theory it should be possible to manage Windows 10 laptops with Azure/Intune, and encrypt them with Bitlocker if they have TPM chips. Though Intune costs money.

I have exactly the same issue with CTouch screeens and Powerpoint 2016. It's driving teachers mad but I'll see about disabling Presenter mode.

My daughter's school run a Chromebook 1:1 scheme and it works really well, whereas there's another school I know well that use Windows for a similar scheme and all the techies do is fix laptop issues. You can (I believe) link them to O365 and manage them that way, but you still have to install a major update twice a year. You can sync GSuite with AD so the users don't have extra usernames and passwords to remember, and printing shouldn't be difficult to set up, especially if you have Papercut. Out of curiosity, do you use any monitoring software on the iPads?

We have a 75" LED screen in our ICT suite that was damaged recently. My top hardware guy reckons it's not economical to repair so we have a quote to replace it. Trouble being it was brand new last summer so the powers that be are reluctant to spend money on it. The wall isn't strong enough for a CTouch or similar and there's no space for a stand. Someone else must've had this problem - what option did you go for? Cheers.

I thought I had, because I've just created a profile and I remember configuring the same settings before. It must've not saved or something. That's done now.

Apologies if this has been posted before; I couldn't find anything similar. I have 26 iPads which I'm trying to enrol in DEP to manage through Lightspeed. They were initially set up with Apple IDs, then enrolled in Lightspeed so I could install apps, SSL certificates etc. but couldn't fully manage them. I've got Apple School Manager up and running, the reseller has submitted all the serial numbers to Apple and the devices appear in Assignment History in ASM and show as being assigned to Lightspeed. I was under the impression that a factory reset would force an iPad to reactivate, and at that point it would enrol automatically but they're not doing that. I can't find any documentation from Apple on this; everything just waffles about how great ASM is but doesn't actually walk you through setting it up. Anybody else had the same problem?

Apologies if this has been posted before but I couldn't find anything similar. One of my schools are running Windows 10 Education 1703 build and users are having major problems with the store. A pupil will log on, attempt to log on to the store with their office 365 credentials to download Minecraft, and they'll see a generic error message saying it can't connect and to try again later. If I delete both their roaming profile from the server, and the local copy, the store will then let them sign in. Trouble is I'm having to do this for 20+ users every week. I've read up on UE-V and I think that could be the way forward. Has anyone had success with this? Do store settings roam so users don't have to download an app every time they want to use it? Cheers.
