That's true - but at the same time do macOS roles have different 'short' names for roles (i.e on Windows: Domain Controller 01 = DC01), do the roles have 'short' names on Mac? What is the standard naming schemes for Mac servers?

Hi, I'm a complete newbie trying to setup a new Mac Network. I've got a new Mac mini (current generation) along with a 2012 version available to use. We also have a USB-C RAID array available that I intend to use for the newer Mac mini. I'm familiar with virtualisation in a Windows environment however unsure of the best route to go down with regards to setting this new stuff up. Client-wise we've got two iMac 5K's and two MacBook Pro's. The older Mac mini is running Sierra (and due to the server limitations being removed in later versions, I'd like to keep it on that unless there's a legitimately reasonable reason to upgrade it). My head is telling me to install all of the 'Main' stuff such as Open Directory on the newer Mac (and hold the home folders etc), and use the older Mac for things such as Printers & update caching etc. Am I best virtualising this using VMware (which we're licensed for if we want to use it), or just installing stuff straight onto the OS? I'd like to get Home Folders setup, so that the clients logging on save all of their data to the server. We don't have any Windows machines on the network at the minute, so we're strictly Mac however we may have to integrate Open Directory with Active Directory down the linen. Not an issue for now, however. My other interesting question is: 'What do you call Mac Servers?' - In a Windows environment I'd have gone with 'DC01' etc as roles were more split-up - however for an 'all eggs in one basket' approach (i.e only having two physical servers), what's the best name to call the two servers? The network is 10 Gigabit, and we can achieve those speeds on the newer Mac as it has the 10GbE Ethernet NIC, and we could also do similar with the older Mac using Thunderbolt. I think I've covered all bases and we have the server app downloaded and ready. Thanks.

Hi, After doing the maths it doesn't seem to be a bad deal. With roughly £600 worth of upgrades, it's cheaper than buying the server new from Dell with the base specs. Looking at also buying a RAID card with it as well. May place a bid, depending on what it goes for. That R630 was a good deal! I may try to see if I can get any sort of "free" RAM Upgrades for it as looking, it seems as if it's been listed/sold before. Thanks. Whistler.

Hi, thanks for the info. I found the T620 you were looking at. Is the listing price out priced compared to other listings (i.e considering it's current gen?). The listing says they can upgrade the RAM, so if I can get somewhat of an upgrade for free, would that be worth it? Thanks. Whistler

Usage case, well.... I will upgrade the RAM on it in hindsight! Want to run a few VM's and compelled to buy something that's current gen. I just thought that even a base T630 is worth the price? It's still got warranty which is a plus for me.

I'm looking at Servers on eBay and have found this one Dell PowerEdge T630 - Xeon E5-2603V3 1.6 GHz - 4GB RAM, 1TB | eBay Is this a good deal at this price? I may want to upgrade the processor but that's it? Don't know the value of current gen Dell Servers, but is it something I want to bid on? Thanks. Whistler.

@nickbro Should this suffice? In testing, when logging in as "temp4" a test account (that's not part of the security group) it just gets a load of redirects and I have to clear cookies before it'll allow me back on (great a a security measure, I guess?!) What purpose does the "Students Group" have in HAP then, I originally thought it was for locking down the login permissions, however seemingly I was wrong! HAPUsers has "Staff" and "Students" as members, as I understand that, by logic by not allowing both will break HAP? Do I have to replicate the code above anywhere else, or is this fine being just in the main web.config? Thanks.

Within WWWRoot>HAP>Web.config or WWWRoot>HAP>Scripts>web.config? If it's the latter where it says "Allow Users *" do I have to put a full LDAP path in, or can I write it out normally?

Hi Nick, I've got HAP setup and working again. I copied my old "HAP" folder, and created a new application pool to something different so the two wouldn't get confused. I've got my old configuration working successfully. For some reason, any active directory user can now login to HAP. I can't remember this being the case in the previous setup. Is this meant to be limited by the "Student's Group" within HAP setup? I've changed it to another group with no users apart of such and it still lets new users login who are members of no groups apart from Domain Users. It's on the home stretch now, I think! Thanks.

Install went alright. However EVERY Admin user I use gets constant refreshes whenever they login. Can no longer access the HAP interface through Chrome. However, through IE, I just get a "Not found" error whenever logging in. This allows me to access the management interface. Any last thoughts, or will a "have to do" work for now!? Thanks.

Haha! HAP's fine as it is (when it works!) - honestly it's great and the fact it's free is unbelievable. Once I've got this up and running, I'll shoot you some money to buy a coffee! Thanks.

I'll scout around. Fingers crossed for the re-install! Am I right with only needing ASP.NET 4.6 and removing the "IIS8" within the Web.Config for it to (in theory) work? Also, is there a donation page for HAP? The support alone (and the hours you work !) is worth a donation!

Sorry, I posted an Edit whilst you were replying! EDIT: Also grabbed the update file. It's 10.5. Configuring a new VM with Server 2012 R2, IIS and ASP.NET 4.6. With regards to the install, as there's no previous config can I configure the folder structure and setup as per your video here: and then overwrite (straight copy/paste) of the update files? When I've downloaded HAP, I'm using the CodePlex site. Is that correct using Version 10.0 FINAL? I've tried to re-install again, created some bookings but still no bookings.xml exists? I'm so confused at this point! Sorry to quiz you at 1:30AM Nick!

Yeah. I get the gist of what your saying. I can live without the booking system, and removed the instance of it under the "Management" section. Any thoughts on the refreshes? It's brand new 2016 build, nothing else apart from IIS and HAP installed.

Update: I've removed the booking system from the site, so it's stopping complaining about the XML. Also, it's now just refreshing on "checking for update" constantly. I cannot navigate within the UI. I've installed ASP.NET stuff that I needed (from within Add Roles etc) which allowed me to load the site. Any idea if there's anything else I need to install?

In true Blue Peter style I did earlier! I tried changing the name of the application pool to see if that'd make any difference. It didn't! I'll try what you said with removing the link. It works fine on normal users (i.e no prompt or refreshes) however the site is useless for Admins currently. I've tried creating a blank XML file, and throws up another booking error. The booking system stuff just seems to not work suddenly since the move to 2016. I've tried on 2012 R2 as well. As no-one else seemingly is having problems, it may be something that I'm doing? ] Hi @nickbro. Got another issue with HAP. We've upgraded to Server 2016 and installed it. Everything went fine, however when logging in as an Admin - it's complaining it can't find a bookings.xml file. We didn't configure any bookings on the site, and now it's refreshing constantly not allowing us to make any changes under the management interface. Any suggestions? I've re-installed twice and re-installed the OS.

Do you think it's anything to do with the reverse proxy I've got setup?

Hi, today we've just setup a new instance of RemoteApp, setup a reverse proxy to pass traffic from our server to our gateway. We're getting this error under OS X: HTTPEndpointException: 4, Not Found Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi everyone, As part as delivering RemoteApp I've setup a single server, 2016 datacenter (not domain joined) with ARR installed along with IIS to act as a reverse proxy solution. I've installed Anti-Virus and configured the Reverse Proxy to work fine. A left it off the domain as Microsoft says joining it is optional. I have set a ten character password (mix of capital, lowercase, numbers etc...) However, I haven't touched the firewall etc on the server itself. I know leaving Windows exposed to the internet is more of a security issue than Linux, however is there anything you'd do if you had to use Windows to deliver this to lock it down. We're using a USG Pro as the Firewall itself. Thanks.
