Before you do anything though it is always best to update the server to the latest release. Generally bugs are fixed in the directory util on each release. I know from experience with 10.5 -10.5.8 and 10.6.0 -10.6.3 that it was always best to update before even attempting this sort of integration. Also I usually forgo the standard setup and jump right into the advanced. In the end it makes setting up your mac server simpler. This is due to the fact that you don't have to mess around with disabling DNS on the mac server since you will be using the AD DNS anyway, well usually you would. Also before starting the process make sure your AD DNS is spot on and then add the forward A record for your new Mac Server's FQDN name and don't forget to add the reverse pointer too. Also of note is to disable IPv6 when going through the configuration process, that's only if you don't use IPv6 though I've had issues with IPv6 running.

3rd Sticky down at the top of the mac forum, there is a thread titled new ad-od integration paper. It should still be relevant to OS X 10.6.

I see the iPad as a supplement to the current ICT infrastructure not a replacement. It can only really be a replacement if you could afford one for everyone due to the lack of multi-user support. But even then I don't think it can do enough to replace a computer entirely. I would look at them as a bookable resource. Out and about hardware for trips etc. But this does not mean to say that they don't have their area or use. You just need to find it. Don't forget that you aren't limited to the app store. You can create your own apps if you are that way inclined to fulfil a need. Hell you may even make a bit of money off of them

The new mini display adaptor is much better for this. It seems to have a more solid click when inserted if you know what i mean. We initially had mac minis driving the boards but switched to the imacs as soon as we could. The minis were fine but the splitters were a pain in the ass. I never liked them and will never miss them. The new minis may even be better since they have dual outputs now, or did But as the rest have said they switch automatically, in fact i would say a bit better than on the Windows side. If you have the NVidia imacs then the NVidia tool can be a git as well. If you have the machine on and then turn on the projector it doesn't always switch automatically. Also on macbooks if the adaptor is disconected and then reconnected at some point it doesn't always switch over either. But only on the Windows side (Xp, Vista, win7 may be better) Back to the question though. You can either use mirrored displays and then the imac will use a 1024 stretched resolution. Basically it stretches the 1024x768 on the imac to fill the screen. You can also use dual display as well. This allows you to set a resolution for each monitor as you probably would assume. To set the primary display, you go to the display panel in system prefs and then drag the menu bar that is on one of the images in the prefs to the one next to it.

Also this may be of some interest. Not sure how well it works though. Never tried it. But i might give it a bash ActivePrint Lite for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

I was sent some links with regards to an Apple guy who works in the education sector. Have a read and see what you think: Digital Roadtrip

I would try to kill 2 birds with 1 stone as it were. Since our VLE is relatively new and is yet to be fully implemented. I could in theory use this as a way for staff to see the benefits of the VLE and also get used to how it functions/works. They then get familiar with the VLE from a pupil point of view but also hopefully will get into this way of working/training looking for solutions. Obviously if its a network issue then I would be on hand If I manage to get it off the ground I will let you all know how the staff feel about it and it's usage.

Also if you want to remove the icon from the menu bar across the top, hold down the apple/cmd key and drag the icon off the bar. It should disappear in a puff of smoke. You may be able to then manage the plist for this bar. I am not 100% sure where this is though as I don't do this myself. Also you may want to mention what you did. It may help others. There are quite a few new comers to the mac that may benefit from your solution.

I just been having a think about this. What about the VLE? If you have a VLE system available to your School, perhaps you could set up your own class ICT Support and development. You could enrol all of the staff and setup up guides and videos on how to do common things. And then when you common questions coming in to the help-desk, a new assignment for staff to work through could be created. This data could also be assessed potentially of the assignments are done correctly. This could lead you to find people that need more of a 1-1 training session. Again a bit more work but might be an interesting way of doing it. I for one will be looking into this method. We don't have to pay for staff access to the VLE. Your's may be the same.

In my experience, the ones that can't do/don't bother with ICT usually are the ones that don't attend the training sessions either. + 1 also for the help-desk FAQs. I would also like to put out there the possibility of video podcasts /video training material done in-house. This way then the user doesn't have to worry about if he/she understands what you are saying in the guides. More work yes, but maybe a better pay-off. I don't know. This is the next thing on my to-do list after the help-desk v2.0 implementation.

What you could possibly do is purchase the 3G models (More expense i know:() but then have a mobile me account and then you could inform the pupils that these devices can be tracked and retrieved if anyone is thinking of stealing them. But then they may see it as a bit of a challenge

They are probably just looking at the speed their home machines and then thinking that the ones at work should be faster since they are managed better. Not necessarily so though since the ones at work have other things that the machines need to do to log in. It's what i would say to them. I'm sure that I read somewhere though that the amount of OU's and linked GPOs can have an impact on the login speed so the hierarchy does need to be optimised on the server-side. Maybe it's something that could be looked at? I haven't seen, let alone used server 2008 though

StudyWiz looks like they're gone so where to next?
HodgeHi replied to HodgeHi's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Hello dwhyte85, I've just had a response from the helpdesk. Not too shabby really Maybe you should give it a whirl again ? -
This issue seemsto be very random. Not everyone has the issue and so is hard to trace the issue. Some believe it to be issues with DNS, others with the bind to the AD. I also believe that there may be some sort of issue with DeployStudio's imaging process. I'm afraid to inform you that no one really knows for sure. Are you running 10.5 or 10.6? 10.6 seems to be better at kicking the DirectoryService whilst sitting at the loginWindow than 10.5. Maybe consult the logs in Console when you experience the issue. You can log in as a local admin to do this. Just make a note of the time on the system so you roughly know where to look in the logs. Hope this helps a little

If you have access to their help desk log into it. You can see all the tickets that you have raised and what status they are at. Also you can start/create new tickets as well. I have just created one. Hopefully they will get back to me soon. -

We had a training day with Karen from Studywiz on Monday. Are you using WebDav with Win Xp? if so there is an issue with XP and webdav connections in general apparently. Also mentioned on MS websites. -
enter terminal an enter sudo periodic daily This runs a cleanup script that is scheduled to run daily by the system itself. However due to the time it is supposed to run (3am) most laptops are not on. This may help. Also you could try sudo periodic weekly and sudo periodic monthly Also you could try resetting the PRAM, although this is only usually for power management i think press the power button and then on boot hold down P, R and the and alt keys. You should see a grey screen and then it will reboot and chime again. Don't blame me though if anything breaks. Use at your own risk.

There are numerous subjects on this throughout the entire mac forum. Also there is a guide at the top of this forum that shows how to integrate and manage mac machines on a Windows domain. My advice would be to take a look at these and then come back with any questions/problems you encounter. Generally once you have gotten your head around the process then you will be in a better position to ask the right questions to resolve your issues.

Once you start to use ARD you will see that it is perhaps one of the best remote management applications around. There is no other better way to manage multiple Mac machines IMO. It is perhaps one of Apple's best pieces of software. As for scheduled software updates, you could use ARD to schedule an update on the clients. You would just add the group of machines you want to update to a Unix task, choose the softwareupdate -i command (or whatever it is) and then schedule that command for daily, weekly, monthly whatever. You could in theory use a task server to enhance this setup. A task server is basically a separate install of ARD that holds the tasks that are run. This then runs on machines that are either not on or connected to the network. As soon as these machines come up or on to the network the task is run against them. This is how i think it works anyway. I haven't done it this way myself though so shouldn't be taken as 100% guaranteed to work

Joomla 1.5 and OS X Sow Leopard needs patching to work.
HodgeHi replied to HodgeHi's topic in EduGeek Joomla 1.5 Package
This was a patch. I think it has since been integrated into the main updates. I would check to see if a fresh install using the latest update works. If not then you could try the patch I mentioned above. Also, be aware that there seems to be conflict with the admin interface in Joomla and the vacation notices, password reset tools etc of the OS X mail tools. I think it is down to the Mootools that each system uses. -
Hello, I'm wondering if someone could help me. I have set up openradius in OS X Server to provide radius authentication for AD users on some WAPs (Airport express and extreme base stations). This is working fine. The users on OS X laptops can connect to the Wifi Access points and are requested to login. This is as simple as clicking on the name of the network and then typing in their credentials. However, on a Windows XP client it isn't as simple. There are many hoops that you have to jump through to get this working. Numerous tick boxes and options needing to be changed. Is there any way that this can be simplified with the services/hardware that I have. I want it to be as simple for the guests as possible. I don't want them to have to change 3/4 of their wifi connections just to get on the wireless network in our School. Hope you can help. TIA.

See if this works. Log in as a user in the group. Drag the Music folder onto your dock and then in the plist edit the the line for the music folder to read ~/Music. Once this is done then add the plist to the list of managed preferences. Alternatively, maybe you could create a launchd using lingon and use the script provided above by sted. Copy the script into a location and hide it and then configure lingon to call the script as part of the launchd process on login?

I don't think you need as much restriction on the OS X side as you do on the Windows side. I haven't locked my os x clients down a great deal. I think this is a good thing. I hate locking down Windows clients as much as i do, and i know my users don't like it too much either but its either that or have them break stuff. I would also get a mac mini server for image deployment. Especially since the new ones have been released.

I could deploy the camino browser until the issue is resolved. IIRC camino uses the proxy settings of the OS so no need to fiddle with anything extra. May help in the interim. You could of course use firefox, but I 'm not sure if you can manage the proxy settings on that.

Not sure if this would work, but maybe just create an item in the location required an just rename it to whatever.app This may be enough to add it to the WGM.
