Thought I might bump this question. I asked something similar a few months back but we all went off on a random tangent. As it's all very new, I thought people might now have some experience to offer. Either this projector, or any other projector. I’m particularly interested if these projectors cope better in conditions where there is high levels ambient light. Now, this is more of a physics question really. The sales man says “oh yes, because the projector is closer to the board – light coming through the windows won’t affect it so much”. Now that sounds like bad-science to me! Surely, there is the same ‘amount of light’ being spread on the same area? The light from the windows doesn’t ‘knock’ the projector’s light out of the way. Does it?

Anyone actually tried this yet? Made a mst using their install manager - it doesn't bloody activate the product! Done this twice on 2 machines. Support request duely logged!
-
Thank you contink! Post duely edited (probably why they only let me teach 4 year olds). HALF PRICE - any takers!

We do the same as chrbb - keep it simple. 2 external hard drives and use windows backup. Full backup on the weekend then incremental backup on week days. Swap the hard drive at the end of the week and one remains off site. The only thing is that in windows you can't encrypt AND compress the backup - just one or other. So we use a little program called FireStreamer-RM ~£30. This allows you to do backup to file but Windows Backup thinks it's using a tape drive. It lets you encrypt and compress the file and will do other little things like email you if there are problems.

No, I think I am being thick actually. Yes - there's no download but I couldn't even get the gallery to install. The reason is, however, because I'd installed it using their custom instillation wizard and, in doing so, I'd disabled downloads - which is why it didn't offer me that option during setup and why 'Check for upgrades' is disabled within the program. I uninstalled it and reinstalled without the transform file and it downloaded it for me - They've stuck it in c:\documents and settings\all users\ - so I'm going to make an MSI and put it somewhere sensible. Their admin tool is quite handy but the registration part doesn't work. You can, just register it once then export the following key from the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SMART Technologies\License Information I'll then reimport it into the mst or something. Will post some instructions when I've figured it out.

Am I being thick? How the hell do you download the Gallery - I know there's no bulk download at the moment, but I can't even work out how to do it inside the program.

An odd one... Try connecting to the computer's admin share (\\computername\c$). Check this works before 4pm then try it after when the printer is not working. That might give you a clue as to whether it's something to do with the network. It's there's not something daft like windows update or a virus scanner updating itself at that time (not that it should matter, of course).

A long shot but: Need a screen for a RM NB-1400 laptop (AKA Compal CL50). Anyone got a dead one knocking about? One of ours has just died and I think it's the bulb on the screen? (You can see a faint outline of the image). Would be prepared to pay costs. Thanks, Ian.

I've just 3 of them... but they're fine.

Well... what ever you do don't just find out the format of a smart board serial number and make up your own. You shouldn't, therefore, enter : SB580-15xxxx (where xxxx isn't a random 4 digit number). A working example wouldn't be: SB580-151111. Don't do it. Just don't.

I emailed them a fairly obscure feature request - being able to use the pen over a flash file - they replied with a fairly useless "that feature it not available" (I know, that's why I'm requesting it!!) but, to be fair, in the next release it was included. My email probably had nothing to do with it; but a very small and trampled part of me (the part that silently cries at the end of sad films) believes that it might have!

FOR SALE: Genuine OKI Drums for a C5100/C5200/C5300/C5400 Cyan Yellow Magenta IJT Compatible Toners for OKI C5100 and 3200 (I assume it does all the printers in that series) Cyan Magenta x2 Yellow All unopened and in original boxed condition. The price of the toner, if you were to buy from IJT Direct today: £136 + VAT Price of drums would be £195 +VAT Total: £330 +VAT I'm obviously not expecting orginal price for them, but it's got to be worth my while going down to the post office. We're a primary school wanting to get rid of these because the printer died. We should be able to invoice another school. Reply or PM with an offer! Thanks,
-
Thanks. So, if I had 15 a/g clients, it would put roughly half on a and the other on g. Then, should another 15g-only clients come along, it'd move some of the a/gs to a to free up space on g for the g-onlys. If it does, that's bloody cleaver but I wonder if I'm expecting too much. I don't want to spend 2k on some kit and ripping out all the APs we have, when I could have achieved something similar by creating a few extra SSIDs for mobile-APs and assigning specific computers to them. Now, this is a long shot, but I'll ask. Anyone know what happens when a client has 2 cards. So my RMs have a/b cards (which are currently disabled) and g-only external. How would Windows and the APs cope if the internal card were re-enabled (b disabled on the AP or, possibly, card). I'm guessing there's no way of making senible use of this internal a card (like teaming the adaptors together??) and windows will make 2 separate connections and access them in the order specified in "Network connections - advanced settings"?

@treckmad: Do you use the 802.11a/g version? If so, can you take a look at my question above? I've downloaded the manual and I can't find anything that explains how the load-balancing works, making me wonder if it even does it. Thanks,
-
I'm interested in the load-balancing aspects of it: Am I right in thinking that if there are multiple clients (like a set of laptops) in the range of 2 or more APs, it will automatically balance them between the APs. So - even if the signal strength on one AP is poorer, it will still send a few clients to that AP because, overall, the throughput will be higher than everyone connecting to the loudest AP. What about the a/g version? If the clients have a/g cards, will it automatically balance the clients between the 2 frequencies? How's about: We have a network of 8 unmanaged g-only APs. I was thinking of replacing those with the managed wireless solution (most classrooms will get very good signal from 1 AP and weak signal from 1 or 2 others) - this should provide basic coverage everywhere. But, to cater for our 30 laptops (half of which have a/g cards - the other half have a/b internal (but currently disabled) and g external), allow staff to plug in another 1 or 2 mobile APs to a nearby ethernet socket. I was thinking that, with 802.11a having 8 non-overlapping frequencies that would be a good way of providing extra capacity. Will the controller cope with this? i.e. will it say, "oh yes, there is already one AP using channel 1, and another using channel 5, so these new ones can use channels 8 and 13". Then, it should load-balance the pcs between them?

According to SMARTtech .com Smart Notebook 10 is due to be released in 5 days. Crap, I only just installed 9.7sp1 last week! Smart, I think, must model itself on Microsoft - it's unwise to install anything until at least SP1 is out. Did anyone have a go at installing the Beta -was it any good? And, more importantly, stable?
-
E2BN don't allow this, at least in Essex they don't. Will they will un-barr it for specific schools - anyone done this?
-
I won't get it (partly) because I find their marketing very aggressive! - They won't stop pestering me "Here's the free trial password you requested" (to persuade the secretary to put them through.) I relented and looked at it once (OK - 2 years ago, things may have changed). Yes, lots of attractive flash games but not very cleaver. If a kid got an answer wrong, it just kept flogging the same dead dog, till they got it right by default. No feedback of any value to the teacher. It's the modern day shut-up sheet (AKA worksheets). We have TONS of 'flash maths games' thanks to Interactive Resources which, also, aren't cleaver but just as attractive - and just £99 for a one of site licence. We have all of their products and staff are overwhelmed enough by that as it is. Quantity <> Quality. WHAT?? Do they even know what that means? Sounds like a load of BS to me. A 60% improvement in what? If I were you, I'd buy something cheep and cheerful like Interactive-Resources to fill the desire for "Something to keep the kids quiet during homework club" then save up and invest in a decent program, like RM Maths, that tailors itself to children's needs and provides real feedback to teachers.

See this thread about a handy script: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows/13549-script-force-install-all-windows-update-wsus.html It doesn't replace Windows Update/WSUS it just forces the computer to download and install all the assigned updates, without having to wait. And gives a nice status indicator too.

Anybody use 'cheap' fake toner in their OKI's?
eean replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
I have a set of original drums for a OKI C5100/5200/5300/5400 and a set of IJT compatable toners. Never opened, but suplas because the printer died. I can do a good price if anyone's interested, PM me. -
It should do. Are your folders on the same location (in terms of drive letter names?)
-
I've went for the 'get cheep replace more often' strategy a few years back and they've lasted about 3 years - probably need replacing now. Things that have helped are: 1. Cable tieing them to the computer so they can not be removed (even if they ARE apparently broken) 2. Getting large hooks from wilcos. You need to screw them onto the monitor otherwise they'll fall off. One on each side. (That's the easy bit) Then train the staff to get the kids to hang them up. (That's the hard bit!). I also hang the mics on the wall out of the way. The size adjustments are the bits that break. They don't need to be adjustable though for primary. So just use gaffa tape to tape them up before they even break. The fluffy ear bits also fall off - but tough. Try and find ones that dont have a volume control (so many staff don't understand that they won't work if they're turned down!). I have a little util that runs on the logon script to set the computer volume on logon. Not ideal, but the least worst way I've found!

A high tech solution. Here's the low-tech solution.

Our touchscreen (not Iiayma) has multihead displays as a feature of the add on driver software, doubt it would work out of the box. The Smartboard software can cope with multiple projectors, so I assume you'll just have to set it up as if there were, even though there isn't! Edit: Oh, and.... Why!? Have you got too much tax payer's cash to waste or something?
