Hmm. Just tried that, but that opens the template file, rather than creates a blank doc based on the template. The former means that it tries to overwrite the template and errors (read only access) and then prompts the user to save it as a new template. We want the latter whereby the user creates a new doc based on that and is nicely prompted to save a new doc file. Olly

Hi We have the user template path location set via GPO so that an exam account uses a custom normal.dot with default font sizes and the like specified within it. However when the exam account opens Word they are prompted to open a Blank Document from a choice of just one. This means an extra click for the person using the exam account. Is there a way to point Word at a custom normal.dot via a template location change AND have it open that normal.dot when Word starts up? Olly

Thanks everyone. I like the idea of having the URL within the QR code itself. Not entirely sure whether we have QR codes on the books or just plain old barcodes though. I'd have to find a way to allow the page to only be viewed once though. Olly

Hi all We want to run a "golden barcode" lottery where the kids can check out books then scan (or enter) their barcode and be told whether they have a winning book. They'll then get a prize of some type. Before I delve in to doing this does anyone know of a tool, site, or service that could do this for us? We need to be able enter the winning barcodes and provide facility for the kids to easily enter or scan their books, perhaps to an app or website. If they scan the winning code we need a way to tell them with a big "YAY!" page or something. I was thinking of just having a page in a wordpress site with the barcode in it and "YAY!" written all over it. If they search the site using the winning barcode number then the page will be found. If not, then the page won't be. We can rule out any "word" searches, such as searching for "yay". Any better ways of doing this? Any experience of something similar? Doesn't *have* to be barcodes, but we can't put winning tickets in the books as kids have been seen to rummage through all the titles leaving a big old mess. Olly

Anyone here got a script that will allow me to silently install the Camstudio lossless codec? The kids here use Camstudio for basic screen grabbing but with the march of tech the filesizes are just getting too big. The Camstudio Lossless Codec seems to be a great one to use, small file size, lovely quality, but I can only find it in an exe format that doesn't support a silent install. If anyone can help that would be great. Olly

Hi chaps I need to knock together an exam account which can be used on any suite of PCs here for pupils sitting exams. The requirement is that the user can log on, get access to a precise list of applications (ideally via desktop icons) and nothing else. The problem is that we install everything at a computer level and so all the icons tend to be delivered by the all-user desktop. This makes removing the icons at a user level difficult. Via a GPO I can hide all desktop icons but this hides everything and prevents me from adding several back via a User GPO. Does anyone know a good way to achieve this? It's made harder by the fact that we need to support the use of *any* desktop rather than a suite of machines dedicated to exams. I did think about knocking together an html file which gives the user a list of apps to choose from, and set this as the shell. This would work but I'm aware that it's....not...standard lets say. Hmmm. That has come up, along with dual booting the macs and VMing windows on the macs, but we apply the macs based on an image which is the same, so we are keen to not have any one group with a variation. Delivering it via RDP allows us to do that. I'll give Wineskin a go though to see whether it's something we can add to our image.

Hi all We have given out loads of macbooks here to student and now we need to give them access to Techsoft 2D Design. We've tried two approaches to this. One was to install it on to our Remote Desktop cluster which works, but the 2D Design toolbars disappear constantly. So then we tried to push the app out using remote apps. This way, the toolbars don't disappear, but the mouse point doesn't line up with where the actual click occurs. So the tip of the mouse is about 10 px to one side of where the click event occurs. Not great for a precision drawing app. We can't use another design tool on the macs easily as we need this tool for our laser cutters. Has anyone tried getting 2D design working on a mac via Remote Desktop? Olly
