Hello One way I use to test SQL Server logins is to take all the other stuff out of the situation, and you can do that by using SQL Server itself, or more accurately a second one. So, sitting at your SQL Server Express box, you could use a command line to attempt to login to the target SQL instance. This tells you if it's accepting logins or not. e.g. (and by the way this is from memory, as I'm not in front of a capable machine right now!) SQLCMD -S [servername] -U [username -P [password] -d [databasename] note that [servername] must include the instance, so if your database is running on an instance called FRED on DB01, you'd specify DB01\FRED If you get a nice shiny 1> prompt then all is well and the problem is somewhere else. If it's a login failed message then it could relate to the account itself, SQL Server not accepting remote logins, firewalls etc.

Why not back it up more often? You could do a full backup each night plus differentials after registration.

It's the other way round - it's not so much what software is used, more that policies should cover it and are being adhered to. Also note that filtering/monitoring works up to the point that people bring in their own internet connections (i.e. mobile devices). eSafety encompasses not just use of the Internet in lessons, but *any* form of electronic communication *at any time* (including outside of school), communication between the staff and parents.....pretty much anything you can think of. I'd encourage everyone to read an LEA's policy on the subject if only to get a feel for how in-depth this is (a couple of links have been provided above, http://www.thegrid.org.uk/eservices/safety/documents/esafety_model_policy_draft_apr09.doc is another).

Are you *sure* you're not pointing to two different servers? If you ping the server from inside the school, do you get the same results as if you ping it from outside?

Hi I am just starting to experiment with rsync, but I am wimping out and using Deltacopy, the nearest I can find to a Windows GUI. As you set your options it appears to display the command line it's using - so while it's not the straightforward answer I am sure you were hoping for, it may give you a pointer.

If it helps anyone: I have vague memories of having a horrendous time getting PHP (5.2.5) working on as IIS6 machine. This was installing ISAPI, not CGI, by the way. If memory serves I'd followed all the guides to the letter and kept getting 404 errors, but eventually found one that mentioned quote marks: Open IIS Manager. Right click on the Web Site and select Properties. From the Home Directory tab click the Configuration button. Click Add to add an Application Extension. Enter "c:\PROGRAM FILES\PHP\PHP5ISAPI.DLL" (wrapped in double quotes) as Executable and PHP as Extension. Leave the rest as default and click Ok And that did the trick.

I also run Virtual PC and VMWare Server on the same machine (XP, was Vista!), with no apparent problems. Having said that, I've not run them *at the same time*! @jamesb: we tend to use Virtual PC here for most testing jobs, but VMWare appliances are often good for a quick look at something open-source.

You don't need a separate licence for Terminal Server - it's a role that's available within Server 2008. You do need to install the licencing role as well as the terminal server role, but again that's part of Windows 2008. You're just needing to ensure the clients are licenced correctly.

But is that a real pub, or do they just get together and pretend they're in a pub? ;-)

I was reminded of this by the 'Music In The Office' thread. While calling some manufacturer or other one day I found myself on hold, listening to some ghastly nonsense and wondered why they don't play something relevant and interesting? Myself and my support desk colleagues then spent an entertaining afternoon devising the "IT support line music-on-hold playlist". What would you put on it?

Hi folks Does anyone know if it's possible to sync the calendar in Kaleidos with Outlook, or any kind of PDA? The idea is to replicate the school diary down to staff's individual calendars. Unfortunately I have no involvement at a technical level with the school that's asked me this question (it's my kids' school) and I know nothing about Kaleidos, so I'm not even sure where to start looking. If anyone knows the answer and/or better where I could go wading through documentation, I'd be much obliged.

Google round a bit and you'll get some more opinions on using these things as chairs, and why gym balls are dangerous (for the, ahem, balanced view). Third recommendation - move about a lot. Get up, walk about. When you're on the phone, stand up. And exercise and stretch regularly. If you've got any friends who do Tai Chi, get them to show you some or the warm up exercises. Hth.
