Unfortunately not, I'll have to order one and see if that improves things. Just wondered if the CRC error could be to do with anything else like drivers before I did that. The backup software used is Veeam V7.

Well, if I load the cleaning tape into the drive the autoloader reports status "cleaning" for a couple of minutes and there doesn't seem to be any other routine to do it, so I'm guessing that's it. Also possible that's our original cleaning tape from five years ago though so I'm not sure if it's just dodgy too...

BIRTHDAY POST!!! =] ... and back to reality. So I can't do anything with any tapes. Any backup job, erase job, inventory job etc, once the tape is loaded, comes back with a CRC error on the tape. I very much doubt something's happened to all 23 tapes and I've run a cleaning tape through it several times, so I'm guessing we have a dodgy tape drive in our autoloader... or could it just be the cable between the autoloader and the backup server???

Okay, after a reinstall of server and client on the SIMS server, and the client on my workstation, the Discover Administration Utility works on the server (it didn't before), but on my workstation it's the same errors. Interestingly, the installer said the database connection information I gave it was invalid while I was reinstalling it on my workstation as well. So it seems my workstation can't talk to the SIMS Discover database properly... but bits of the config utility (e.g. transfer history) DO work, as does SIMS itself... really can't see what could be wrong here...

There's a button to launch Discover within SIMS. Transfers are showing as successful.

Oh, plus the fact that that table exists but there's nothing actually in it...

The versions are definitely correct. The application setting table IS present though, so I think it's related to not being able to log in. But this is passed through from the main SIMS screen so I don't see what could be wrong there...

Added to that is a love of automation (re avoiding work) and a hatred of printers. Occasionally the Site Team will poach my Technician for a while. I will then poach their coffee for a while.

One of our users has difficulty with her eyes and only had a laptop, so in the absence of a docking station I've just hooked it up to a keyboard/mouse/monitor in her office and she can use it there ad infinitum.

I think those settings are global I'm afraid. You can set per printer whether it asks for a PIN I suppose. Could be wrong though.

PaperCut supports user PINs and auto-enrolment (so the first time they just enter their user name/ID and it asks them to set a PIN). They then use a combination of both to log into the printer.

There's a good diversity of approaches here. For many schools it will be "laptop or desktop" or perhaps "laptop or remote access". What has been the business case in the past for equating them?

We do currently allocate staff laptops but haven't refreshed them in a while. Staff have full admin access to these laptops. That means maintaining a balance between empowering teachers to install applications for their own productivity on the one hand, and dealing with the "it's really slow on the Internet because I've installed six IE toolbars" complaints on the other. We may look at a salary sacrifice scheme along the lines of those offered by e.g. Stone Computers or BT Business Direct, though introducing it after having provided them "for free" for so long would be very tricky. Some case studies on whether or not they actually make a real difference to staff productivity these days, where (as in our case) most staff do have a home device and remote access can bring them their full desktop, could be useful. The same debate has been had out before around IWBs and how tangible the difference was when viewed in the long term.

Le EDIT: sorry, I've been translating all night... We manage that through a single GPO here, but we've also enabled ABE on the file server and then configured the permissions such that e.g. only the security group for staff members has access to the "Staff Tools" folder etc. You can use that to configure a custom menu for all user groups. In this way, the librarian is the only one who can see the "Library Tools" folder, which contains shortcuts to things like Heritage and her beloved CorelDraw 7 (local installation, I could never get her to see the light)...

That's our sanction for first-degree abuse.

You can use PowerShell to get all mailbox users under e.g. one OU and disable the protocols as mentioned above in (something like) a single command. TechNet has a decent Exchange PowerShell resource or I'm sure a member could assist you with scripting it up if finding the time to research it is very difficult at the moment.

Any reason it's based on computer security group rather than OU?
