  1. Would I recommend Commsupport? I had been trying to get the CCNA for nearly a year with self study and with one thing or another the stuff I was reading was not sinking in. I was reading but not understanding the “why!” of everything. I am not the sort of person that is not happy to accept that things are the way they are I need to know why things work the way they do. I got to a point that I was going just ditch the CCNA. I felt that the course that they run is not just about going through the motions of learning the topics parrot fashion but actually learning the ins and outs of the different protocols. Like they say “100% engineer training” The hands on stuff was very intense and detailed but the best part was when the instructor came along and broke the lab that you had just spent hours building and it was up to you to fix the thing, great fun. I did the course back in August for the first time but events over took me again but they let me resit the whole course again a few weeks ago from scratch for free despite me telling them that I had not opened the book as much as I should have. Nice people, without the second chance on the course for free I might again have let things slip again Once again would I recommend them. Well put it like this, without them I would not be a CCNA.
  2. Just thought I would post here to say that I passed my CCNA. I passed with 973, not bad. I did the Course with Commsupport in August but due to family and work commitments I let things slip. I rettended the CCNA at Commsupport in Manchester last week on the free retake and yesterday I passed, woo-hoo. What can I say. Nice work guys. Thanks guys keep up the good work and thanks for fixing my busted home router

  4. Use the range command to un shut the ports inter range giga 1/1 - 48 no shut
  5. Don't STP off!!! The reason that your P.C's are taking there time in downloading their policies is because of STP, but you must tell STP that those P.C ports (Access Ports) are indeed access ports, you need to turn on "portfast" (Cisco) "Edge Port" (HP/Netgear) The arp look like rouges, remember that arps are requests from devices but they can also come from devices annoucing themselves into the network, saying "hello, I am a router. Hello I am a router" gratuitous arps!!! WS is the only way to track down the arps, but arps are a part and parcel of a network, if you want to reduce them in a network or reduce the scope of their broadcast domain then use vlans Hope this helps
  6. Do those switches support any form of storm control on the ports. I know that HP and Cisco switches you can disable a port of the input unicast/Multicast/broadcast surpasses a certain percentage of port util Make sure spanning tree is turned on, if it is a flaky nic on the network then use WS to id the NIC and get shot of it. Hope this helps
  7. It looks like a spanning tree problem, but might not be a broadcast storm, if it was it would be permanent until the loop is removed, it is worth investigating that avenue. To me it looks like someone is plugging their own switch into the network causing the root bridge to be recalculated, or even the addition of the switch is making the diameter of your network exceed the 7 hop limit imposed by 802.1D, unless you are running 802.1w which is then a 20 hop limit. but in any event I would do the following: 1. Statically set the speed and duplex of all links. 2. If the 3com support UDLD then turn it on on all up links copper and fibre 3. Statically set the root bridge 4. Enable "bpduguard" on all access links I am talking from a HP/Cisco world and don't know if 3com support these features Hope this helps

Does the switch that sits between the router and the switch that has the P.C on it have the VLAN that you want the P.C to be a member of PC--SWITCH(VLAN 3)-----SWITCH(VLAN3)-----ROUTER(VLAN3) The transit switch must host the VLAN that it you want to carry, even if there are no members of that vlan on that switch Make sure that the links on the HP that are being used as trunks are all members of the tagged vlan. Hope this helps

  10. If you have no QoS on the switch turn on flow control, if you have QoS on the Switch they turn it off. Because switches can implement QoS policies. simple flow control can mess up complex QoS settings. Imagine your switch trying to do it best to provide expedited forwarding for voice and then getting a PAUSE frame from a station, telling it to stop talking for 50 milliseconds. Some switches can only receive PAUSE frames, but not to send them.
  11. Hi ICTNUT I have used HP for many years, just about to get into Cisco, but what I do know is that you do need to look into providing redundancy in your network. HP only support VRRP, but your HP 2824's do not support this protocol, you will have to buy either the 3500's or the 5400's and purchase an additional premium edge license to activate the VRRP feature. You see, if your gateway fails, the other one has to take over the role of routing, and this is what VRRP does for you Without this feature you can only have redundancy at layer 2 but not at layer 3.   12. Hi I am going on the Commsupport Course in Manchester on the 17th of August I will let you know how I got on. So for so good, I went to see them on the free one day courses that they hold, just to make sure that it's real, the instructor basically took us over basic networking all the way to routing, quite interesting, I hope the course is as good as the one day course. Anyway will let you know how I got on.
