Sorry if I'm being picking but until some independant person\company publishes a report showing their findings quoting numbers like 250MB of RAM vs 5MB of RAM is total rubbish. I've just opened SIMS and done a few things and it's sitting at 24,316KB, I'm sure if I allocate more RAM it'll eat it, or if I spent the entire day in SIMS it'll grow but it's still a way off from your 256,000KB you've quoted. Like I said, I'm not arguing that optimized vs non-optimized won't help, I completely agree, sticking something like SIMS .net in the cloud would be silly when you compare it to something like your MIS that has been designed for the cloud from the ground up. I'm just saying stick to the actual hard facts. You're not having to waste resources running multiple copies of the OS for example. Rather than quoting unscientific numbers, it doesn't help. They get quoted as fact then business cases fall part at the first huddle because the facts aren't actual facts.

Good point, I often use CentraStage as a good example of Cloud services - however my biggest complain is the lack of an publically open REST API - it's all well and good that they can record a huge wealth of information but it's not achieving it's full potential by being able to fully integrate with other data sources. Being able to integrate cloud service with other services including on-prem is critical. Rackspace and Microsoft both see this. 95% of all stats are made up. Could you please cite this otherwise it's just another made up stat. I'm not arguing a multi-tenant\cloud optimized requires less resources than a single-tenant\non-cloud which isn't optimized - that would be silly. I'm just saying quote your facts otherwise it'll be like when people say Capita annual maintenance is £20k per year for a small primary (it isn't it's for a secondary being forced to re-licensed). Not a fan on Alienware since Dell took them over. Really don't like gaming laptops in general either. Personally I'd rather get a mid-range pc then replace it regularly. Surely for the amount of money you pay for an Alienware, they'd upgrade it for you when you get the new gpu?

I think you might want to edit that. SIMS Share and SIMS Setups are two different things. SIMS Setups - worse case scenerio - oh well Capita application appears on a few torrent sites. SIMS Share - legacy system use this - attendance, FMS (so like payroll), exams (unlikely in a primary), school photos often appear in there. Make sure your crystal clear it's just the setups folder that is exposed not any of the other folders.

Good luck. Out of interest how do you get around the whole SYSTEM account doesn't have access to the share? Do you share the SIMS setups directory separately then grant everyone (read) permission?

Sounds like you've reinstall S3 and it's got into a bit of a pickle. Glad it's sorted. The S3Unlock too should also give you the GUID one the "locked" ones. Might save you installing SQL management studio if it comes up again somewhere else.

... with a nice SQL 2012 Standard license (processor) as you'll only have 1 physical CPU and more than 30 users (total, not concurrent) and you don't want to limit SQL to 1GB of that nice 16GB. Also, random did you know fact - Did you know if you use AMD processors you get a discount on Microsoft SQL processor licensing

Trust you @vikpaw. Out of interest why haven't you taken the plunge into SOLUS3? Surely downloading the update to wifi clients prior to apply the release would make it worthwhile

If your supporting a few primaries with SIMS and the SIMS server is running Windows Server, it's worth asking for the installers. Poke @PhilNeal if you have any trouble getting hold of it. It's getting beyond a joke now, it's been out for ages. It seriously is worth the hassle. I've been almost tempted to setup a SIMS maintainance company because if you've got SOLUS3 up and running you can pretty much forget about SIMS (from techy point of view anyway) especially if you've got Redstor for your backups.

You find people response to really old topics then the topic appears in the "new" list, then the out-of-date information becomes "fact", then problems occur as people try applying old fixes that are no longer required rather then starting a new topic and getting a proper response. Plus it's annoying getting notifications for really old topics and I hate having to manually go in an unsubscribe.

Is it possible to lock old topics and require people to create new topics?

Copy your connect.ini from s:\SIMS\connect.ini to c:\program files (x86)\sims\sims .net. Make sure it doesn't have a redirect line.

Fair point but like I said. Having something on your site saying UK only DC and letting people visit the DC and signing a document confirming this - it still comes down to trust. They could move the servers the day after, or forward your data outside of Europe. You of course build the trust by visiting the DC and checking out what they telling you.
