Afternoon All Anyone use VBScript for their logon script? I have an RM CC3 network and I want to set some PCs up to use AD instead of logging on via RM. I need to map their drives so, having used VBS in the past, set to creating a login script. However, whenever I run the script I get the attached error. My server name is correct as is the sharename. I'm using the following code: Option Explicit Dim WshNetwork Set WshNetwork = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Network") WshNetwork.MapNetworkDrive "S:", "\\admin\sims\" WScript.Quit Cant work this out - any ideas? Cheers scripterror.doc

Not sure if this is the right place to raise an Outlook query? Please let me know if I should post this elsewhere. We have created a userid called Calendar and we use to store all organisation wide calendar information. The calendar for this user is shared and all staff can view the calendar to see what is going on on any given day. I have set one user up as an Owner. She is then able to go and create / amend / delete all entries. However, I want to allow several other staff to have this privelige too - I tried setting them up first as a "Publishing Author" then a "Publishing Editor" and then as an Owner but they got a message as follows: "Cannot Open this item. Cannot open the free/busy information. You do not have sufficient permission to perform this operation on this object. See the folder contact or your system administrator" I have tried running outlook /cleanfreebusy but this doesn't make any difference. Can anyone help? Thanks,

Why's that guys? Have I got the numbers round the wrong way? Should I set the DHCP lease to a number below DNS Scavenging then?
-
DNS Scavenging currently set to 7 and 7. I'm gonna set DHCP lease to 8 days.
-
Well thanks to all your tips on this forum, DNS scavenging ran on my network this morning and scavenged 704 records!! So I no longer have duplicate IP addresses in my DNS!!! Thanks guys. How long should I wait before reducing the lease time on my DHCP servers now - current lease is set to 14 days. Recommendations on here are to set to 7 days. I thought about setting laptops to 2 days. Thanks,
-
Only got one DHCP server on the network. Am going to set another one up and disable the scope so I've got something ready for a disaster situation

Hello All. Sorry for the number of posts I'm putting up - I'm new to this schools network and there are lots of problems!! See previous posts on DNS issues. The problem that I have is multiple records in DNS for the same IP address but with different device names - e.g. I have one IP address that has 6 names associated with it!! I have 4 domain controllers and scavenging is turned on on 2 of the four - at server level (i.e. right click server name, select Ageing and Scavenging). On these two, I've got the default settig of 7 days No-Refresh and Refresh. If I select the domain name from each server (under Forward Lookup Zones, Right Click Properties, Aging), all four are set to scavenge with the default setting of 7 days No-Refresh and Refresh. If I check my DHCP settings, my lease time is set to 14 days. This doesnt seem right - I thought DNS No-Refresh / Refresh days should be about the same as DHCP lease times (8 days I though??) I have manuall selected "Scavenge Stale Resource Records" on my root server and this has done the following:Visisted Zones = 4; Visisted Nodes = 561; Scavenged Nodes = 442; Scavenged Records = 783. Its obviuosly gotten rid of a lot of redundant items, but I still have lots of duplicates!!! Help!! Should I turn scavenging off on all but one DNS Server (my root server) and set DHCP Lease time to 8 days? Or somthing else. Sorry for the long post - but I'm kinda getting frustrated now!!

Hello All. I think one of my Domain Controllers was installed with Terminal Services in Application Server mode and not in Remote Administration Mode. Is there a way to check this? Can I simply uninstall TS on a DC and reinstall without problems? Thanks,
-
Is it OK to update the DNS properties within TCP/IP properties and run a DNSflush / DNSregister on a Domain Controller running DNS without rebooting the server? Thanks
-
Hi all! I've got 4 domain controllers (lets call them Srv1 Srv2 Srv3 and Mail) - all with DNS istalled (Active Directory Integrated). DNS settings within TCP/IP settings on Srv1 & Srv2 point to each other; DNS settings within TCP/IP settings on Srv3 & Mail point to Srv1 and Srv2. I thought that if a DC was running DNS, the TCP/IP settings for each within network settings should have ALL DC's IP addresses listed? (Just read that back and not sure if it makes sense??!!). Also, my forward lookup zones contain multiple entries for single IP addresses. i.e. one IP address is assigned to 4 different Pcs - I'm assuming DNS Scavenging is not working properley? So I've checked Ageing and Scavenging at server level - Srv1 and Srv2 are checked but Srv3 and Mail are not. Next I checked the properties of my domain name (within the forward lookup zone) and have found that scavenging is checked on all 4 - Srv1 Srv2 Srv3 and Mail. Confused!! I'm not sure if my DNS is screwy or I'm out of touch!! Any ideas?

Hi All. Well at last we've got our server back up!! Slight problem now is that many users have not got all of their emails. I think they have got offline folders in use - if I check in Documents and Settings under the path "\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\", I have an outlook0.ost file (761KB) and an and outlook.ost file (33,745KB). I cant get access to the outlook.ost file!! If I try and add another Data File, I can only load a .PST - how do I load the original outlook.ost? If I select Data Files, Settings, Advanced and click the Offline Folder File Settings button, I dont get an option to change location - the browse button is "greyed" out!! Outlook Client is 2007 Any help much appreciated!!

Morning Mattx. Couldnt swap the drive on the fly. The previous IT team had this build on a server that didn't use hot swap drives (the Raid card is a Perc3C) - I think the server is around 8-10 years old!! Why on earth they installed Exchange 2003 on a box that old is beyond me!! I have worked with Perc 5C's and these do allow hot swapping. I always spec servers with hot swap drives - knowing how frequently you can get drive failures, I dont want to keep shutting servers down! Can you throw any light on SCSI v SATA v SAS? Not sure what drives to spec with the new server!!
-
Thanks for this JJ. Not sure if I can stretch to an r900 but should be able to get a 2950. Wasn't sure whether I should be looking at SAS drives or SATA - I'm more used to SCSI3!! What's the best / difference? I quite like the idea of 6 drives and splitting O/S, database and logs. Although you guys think that I might get away with just a raid1 and a raid5?
-
Hi All. Server hardware has difinitely gone so we are going to see what we can get off of our last restore. I am going to spec up a new server to replace this one - it had one Raid set with system drive, database and logs set up logically on this. I thought ideal config for this was O/S - Raid1, Database - Raid 5 and Logs - Raid1. So server would need to be able to hold 7 drives am I right? I am looking at Dell server for my 1500 users. Are we going in the right direction here?
-
I've got around 1500 user accounts - including teachers and support staff!!! To be honest, I need the simplest solution - I would like to stop the Exchange Server being a DC but if that's too complicated, I will keep it as a DC for now. I'm a bit rusty on rebuilding a DC anyway - haven't done it for a while!! Need to find a good article on the web that explains how to restore DC and Exchange.

The server had the ususal alarm that goes hand in hand with a disk failure but was up and running. Our analysts downed the server and removed the failed drive, replacing it with a good one. When they fired the server up, it failed to start - complaining the boot sector was missing. They put the old disk back in but still no joy. When I got to look at it, a disck consistency check had been run which reported it had "fixed" the problem. When I rebooted the server, still got the missing boot sector message. I was on the phone to Dell for a couple of hours and we tried lots of different things but to no avail!! I now need to rebuild and I am thinking of rebuilding back onto a member server. Does it matter that the previous mail server would ahve been a DC? If I restore what I have got from tape, will it get in a mess? What do I do about the fact that the original install of Exchange would have extended the AD Schema? Will a rebuild recognise this? What about all the user accounts - how will that work? Sorry for loads of questions ....

Not sure if you will remember me - I'm the guy that has inherited a dodgy Windows Network. On an earlier post, I mentioned that I have 5 domain controllers one of which was an Exchange Server. Well guess what? Today the server suffered a hard drive failure and, depsite RAID5 being installed on the server, we have lost everything! I spent hours trying to resurrect but have had it! What makes it worse, is that I found out today our backups aren't working! The last completed backup was about 2 weeks ago! I am concerned that some advice on this forum suggested demoting a Domain Controller running Exchange server to a standard member server would be a problematic exercise. Can anyone expand on this for me? Should I rebuild an Exchange box as member server now, or do I have to rebuild it as a domain controller? Was looking forward to a good weekend but I think I know where I'm gonna be!!! Many thanks,
-
Thank you all for your feedback. Good to know that our plans sounds sensible. In answer to some of the points raised: We have one server that has been setup with all FSMO's - and three of the five setup as Global Catalogs. I thought that the Infrastructure Master shouldn't be running as a global catalog? Alos, should I have the FSMO's split? Isn't it good practice to have PDC Em and RID on different servers too? Thanks again to you all for your help.

Hi there - you may recall that I have recently taken over a school network (Windows 2003 Active Directory) that seems to be something of a mess!! I am frequently getting network problems (see previous post) today I lost one of the domain controllers and the whole network just stopped - servers and PCs. I had to physically remove the power lead from the server to get it up and running. I'm guessing the server that crashed was the PDC Emulator - but I wouldn't have expected the whole network to stop because of this. I have today discovered that of my servers I have 3 domain controllers setup with user profiles and as file servers. I have an Exchange 2003 Server - also setup as a domain controller. I have a Windows 2003 NAS box - setup as a domain controller!!! The only device in my network (other than PCs) that is not a domain controller is another NAS box. So I have 5 domain controllers in a 6 server network!! I have around 150 laptops and 200 student PCs in the domain along with about 50 printers. All kit is located on one site. I think I should demote the Exchange Server to a member server and demote the NAS box to be a member server too. I also think I should move all files and profiles off of the domain controllers and store them on a NAS box. Do you think this is the right approach?

Hi Geoff. Not sure what the DHCP scavenging is set to and I can not remember how to find out!! DNS is setup to scavenge stale resource records every 7 days.

Morning all. The switches are all HPs - 2600's, 2800's and 5300XL's. Thanks for your help with this guys - I'm dreading the next DHCP refresh as I'm sure the same thing is gonna happen again!
-
Ok Whitestar - I'll give it a whirl tomorrow. Thanks for your help so far. Any ideas what I should do if it works / fails?
-
Thanks for the quick reply Whitestar. The reason I thought it might be DHCP server related is I have a number of switches and this problem has happened on quite a few of them. When I check the event logs on the switches there is nothing recorded - they just report system up time (expect of course when the switch is reset!) In the past we have even had the switch management software open when the "issue" occurs and nothing is reported in the logs. The client PCs all record DHCP problems - and they all occur at 50% through the lease period - it just seemed to much of a coincidence that the switch goes down when the client are trying to renew?
-
Hello there - I'm new to this forum so am hoping you guys can help me out of a hole!! I've inherited a Windows 2003 Active Directory domain that has got a single DHCP server on the network, about 20 HP Switches and about three hundred client pcs. The previous IT Manager set it up with a subnet mask of 255.255.252.0 and a single scope of 10.12.12.2 - 10.12.15.44 with a lease period of 14 days. What happens is every 7 days or so, a number of PCs (that are all connected to the same switch) do their job and go and seek out the DHCP server to verify their address and to renew but they all lose their network connections - my helpdesk phone rings off its hook with users complaining! The other IT staff have been told that when this happens the "quick way" of fixing it is to reset the switch that all the PCs are connected to and this does fix the problem. When I check out the event logs on the affected PCs they all report issues with renewing IP addresses. I have not seen this problem before and I have not seen a single scope setup in this way before. What do you guys think? I think I should have at least one other DHCP server on the network for redundancy anyway. Should I have multiple scopes setup for four network segments (e.g. 10.12.12.x 10.12.13.x 10.12.14.x and 10.12.15.x) on the one server? Sorry for the long post but I'm stuck!!!!
