Hi all. Can anyone tell me how to control Mac's with Workgroup Admin? My users are logging onto iMacs, with account validation being done by Windows Active Directory but I dont know how to get workgroup admin ro control their drive mappings and desktop preferences. Many thanks, Brahma

Hi all. Have just downloaded Comodo Firewall software and AVG AV software. I have jsut installed Comodo and seen that it offers free AV too. Any thoughts on this? What are the recommendations on these two - should I install Comodo Firewall and AV or just go with Comodo Firewall and install AVG? Cheers,

Hi All. On occasion I login to a Mac on my network, and it doesn't load the user shell. I just get the background with, apparently, no Finder. Dock isn't loaded either. I have to turn the Mac off and on again - if I log in with a different user, it often works - but not always. Not sure, but I think it is always the Admin account that hangs. I'm running Leopard clients on a Tiger OS X. Mac client is also bound to AD Any ideas?

Have downloaded the Admin Tools. Thanks JonahIJ

Hello all. I am sure I read somwhere on here that you can install Workgroup Manager on a client PC in order to manage macs. Am I right or have I got that wrong? If I am right, can you tell me where I can download the software? I thought it might be on the OS X Server CD but the previous IT Manager at my school has lost the CD!! Do you guys have any tips on using Worgroup Manager? Cheers,

Hello All. I am a little short on desktop space so have added a flat screen monitor to my eMac. I want to be able to turn the screen off of the eMac and just use the Flat Screen. I can't find a way to do this - any tips? By the way, have installed 2GB Ram on the eMac and Leopard - it runs great!! Cheers,

Hello all. Have a problem with outlook clients losing their account settings. When you try and start Outlook, you get told that it can only be opened in safe mode - when you try and open it in safe mode, it fails. The only way to resolve is to delete the email account and recreate it. The clients are all using Outlook 2003 and the Server is Exchange 2007. Anyone seen this sort of problem? Cheers,

Hello everyone. I'm hoping that someone out there can help me? I have only recently moved into School IT having spent my time working in the Financial business. I have a great deal to learn about both IT and the Government expectations from IT departments in schools - and that brings me on to my question about VLEs. I have grasped what they are but what I dont get yet, is when they have to be implemented! There seems to be a number of stages to a VLE - can anyone confirm what these are please? And also - more importantly - when each of these stages needs to be completed. I am a bit concerned that my school is a bit behind where we need to be and I am desparate to know what deadlines we should be working towards. I know that the school leaders need to get involved too but I want to make sure that IT is in line. Many thanks,

Hello all. I would like to get more familiar with the “ins and outs” of how Macs work in a networked environment – I have managed to bind the 8 IMacs to our Active Directory domain but, as you know, this does not give me control over the IMacs. I know nothing about OS X Server or Leopard so am looking to get a couple of books that outlines the basics - just wondered if you have any suggestions? I’ve seen these but am not sure if they are any good. Hi all!! I am quite new to Macs and am learning as I go - so far with some great help from this forum. Thanks all so far. I dont think we are using OS X Server to its full potential yet. Our students currently login to their EMAC with a generic userid and then use "Connect to Server" to access their personal drive on the server. I am rolling out some new IMAC's and would like to use "Simple Finder" and "Parental Control" to control what my students are allowed to access (until I get up to speed with OS X Server). Unfortunately, I have lost the "Go" menu and that means I can't run "Connect to Server" to access my server. Is there a way around this if I want to use Simple Finder, or is there a better way? Many thanks,

Thanks again for all these tips guys. I've had a look at the website you sent me, HodgeHi, and followed the instructions. Slight issue tho' - I cant update the user template even when I'm logged in as an Administrator. I get the message 'The folder "User Template" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access prvileges.' Any ideas?

Another question along the same track - sorry. My 10 IMacs are all Mac OS X Version 10.5.4 and I am going to roll them out attached to AD. I have my "test" machine on AD and I can access my home drive. I'm not sure when I'm gonna get my OSX Server up and running so am thinking of other ways I can restrict student access to some of the applications (i.e. remove them from their view). Can I use the "System Preferences" -- "Parental Controls" to do this with a network account or does it only work with local accounts? Also, I have heard about the "Create Mobile Account at Login" option (I think its kinda like using a local profile?) Is that available under my version of the Mac OS? And if so, should I be using it? Cheers

Thanks guys. Couple of things tho' When I insert the DVD, nothing happens - I dont get an icon on the dekstop - however, if I shutdown and restart, I do!! Is there something I have to do to make the Mac "open a windows" when the disk is installed? Good news - can now eject the CD!!! How do I create a shortcut on the desktop?
-
Just found out that we've got an "Apple Mac Server" thing!!!! Yeah ok - really showing how clever I am now!! How can I find out if it meets the need? What do I do with it!!! IS there any documentation available anywhere that I can learn from? Thanks

Hello All. As I am new to IMacs, I am looking to get a fast track route in - can anyone recommend a good website or book that can do this? I'm used to everything Windows and am struggling with the differences. I need to know things like: How do you eject a CD/DVD? How do I explore the contents of a CD/DVD? How do I create an image of an IMac that can be transferred to another IMac? How do I maximise a screen? How do I install a printer? Sorry - I feel really dumb!!
-
Thanks for your replies guys - really concise!! I haven't any money to spend on new hardware / software this year so will probably have to just bind to AD for now. Could you give me a bit of insight into "Mac OS X Server" - is that just the OS (ala Windows 2003 Server) or is it the hardware too? Sorry - got a lot to learn with these ......!!!

I am new to using MACs and know nothing and am keen for a bit of help!! I've got 10 new MACs that I need to get networked and get them onto my Windows 2003 Domain. I've got my test MAC on the AD domain and now have a couple of quesitons - hope someone can help! If I logon to the MAC with an AD user account and open Finder and go to the "Shared" tab, I see all of the shares that are available on the authorising domain controller, including my user accounts share (listed ith a $ at the end). How can I hide these shares? I would like to map some drives and provide access to printers currently being delivered by my domain controllers, in the same way as my PCs work. How can I do this? Is it possible to create a policy that restricts access to certain components on the MAC dependent on user logon permissions - again in the same way as PC work? Is this a MAC policy or would it be an AD policy Many thanks again for helping the Newboy!!

More Login Script agro!! I've got my network drives mapping spot on now but am having trouble wiht printers. I want to map a printer for a user based on group membership and have tried the following: If isMember("Printer_OFFICE1_2600N") Then WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\print-01\OFFICE1_2600N" Elseif isMember("Printer_RECEPTION_2300DTN") Then WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\print-01\RECEPTION_2300DTN" ElseIf isMember("Printer_FINANCE_OFFICE_2600N") Then WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\print-01\FINANCE_OFFICE_2600N" Endif I am using an account to test this that is only a member of "Printer_RECEPTION_2300DTN" but they get printer "\\print-01\OFFICE1_2600N" mapped and not reception!! I have put some wscript.echo commands in to see what is happening - I am getting an echo from Office1 and not from Reception - the script seems to map to the first printer - regardless of group membership - and then exits without testing the other If statements. Even tho' my user is not a member of Office they get the Office printer and even tho' they are a member of Reception they dont get the reception printer!! What am I doing wrong?

Thaks for the scriptiong websites guys!! Will be spending a lot of time on them today!! FN-Greatermanchester - I am going to take all my staff PCs and laptops out of RM and just use RM for the students. For the age of my laptops, I am seeing a big overhead with RM running - coupled with the fact that I dont like the restrictions that RM applies. I am going to use just AD for managing staff, so need a login script for drive mapping and printer mapping etc. Will also use it for running any extra stuff as and when

Anyone out there got an RM C3 package for Microsoft Project 2003? Cheers
-
FN-Greatermanchester - you are a star!! I've been looking at this for hours - guess I got to the stage where I couldn't see the wood for the trees!! Thanks again. Incidentally - do you know of a good reference (book or web site) for vbscipt coding that can be used in login scripts? Many thanks
