While it is an interesting piece of software, it's not an OS. I would recommend trying it if your server has enough spare resources though.

If it's a multi-database setup, SIMS will edit the connect.ini to record the database that was used last.

Can't say I've used anything other than freenas, it's still in development, but some alternatives are listed here: https://alternativeto.net/software/freenas/

depending on the strip, you can cut every few LEDs, some can be cut after every LED. You can get completely waterproof strips as well, and I'd get my mitts on an 1860 to run it, you can salvage some from a broken laptop battery pack Also, keep an eye on the number of LEDs per meter, you can get some very densely packed strips!

Oh yeah, you can add deceptive business practices to the list; They said they added an option to disable it but it only stopped some of the data being sent, and it was a conscious decision not to disable all data being sent.

I use Ruckus, they are one of the top brands for a reason and they have been rock solid for me. I wouldn't use Unifi purely because the APs dial home with data about your network, and it can't be fully turned off last time I checked.
