I looked into this back when I was working with SBS on a daily basis and every time I looked into it the bottom line seemed to be 'don't do it'. SBS is designed to be a well integrated collection of technologies and if you remove certain parts of it you can end up with a very grumpy SBS... What I have done previously is to install the SQL Management Studio and limit the amount of resource that WSUS and the monitoring (IIRC it uses SQL!?) can snaffle away. Sorry I can't be any more help than that but I haven't touched SBS in a little while now!

Not that I personally owned it but we had a Technics Digital Compact Cassette player at home years ago... My dad worked in service for Panasonic and it was one of many orphaned bits of equipment that never caught on (we also had a 3DO...).

Would I give one to students? No. Would I give one to teaching staff? No. Would I give this to a particularly tech-savvy member of staff? No. Would I use this for work? No. Would I use this at home? Nope. There's a pattern emerging here... Apart from my deeply ingrained allergy to anything but displays with an Acer logo on it that just has to be the stupidest design I've seen in recent history.

I'm currently working on replacing some elderly 3Com APs with a nice shiney new wireless system at one of the primary schools we manage. Following the first site survey I've been given pricing for 13x Netgear WNDAP360 access points and a controller. Does anyone have anything positive to say about the Netgear stuff? It's a smaller primary and as things stand I could switch the 3Coms out with half a dozen £25 TP Link access points with a fairly good shot at improving coverage but obviously want to leave them with something suitable! I'm waiting on a quote for Meraki which is our usual preferred wireless kit but after reading around a bit Unifi and Ruckus also seem to be very well regarded... how far short of these does the Netgear kit fall? I subjected myself to 'Left Behind' last night... The standard of acting through the whole film reminded me of the cheesy henchman's family scene from Austin Powers... Netflix let me down for the first time... :-(

Dell OptiPlex 7010 USFF running an i5-3470 (I think?), 16GB of DDR3 and an SSD driving 3x Dell P2213's using a Logitech Wave desktop. Laptop for onsite work at primaries is a VeryPC ThinBook 15 with a Haswell i5 and 8GB of memory and my own lid design. One lucky geek right here!

Over the summer break I commissioned a batch of 120(ish) Zoostorm Deltas; only problem I experienced was a tendency to leave the 12v cable floating around the CPU fan; not great if they get knocked loose in transit and foul the blades of the stock Intel cooler; perhaps an adjustment in practice is needed there? Now starting to roll out a batch of near identical (but beautifully branded) VeryPC units; from what I've seen so far cabling is neatly done on all with no possibility of any interference with the CPU cooler. That'll save me a LOT of time.

I have two pairs with the same prescription, one with deeper lenses than the other and I find that gives a bit of a difference if I swap from one to the other (not to the extent of headaches though). I personally review my yearly; usually around september time I find that headaches are the order of the day. The prescriptions don't change wildly but if like me you're already prone to headaches and migraines it can make a real difference!

The sad fact is that if you want a better PHONE with everything else as an afterthought you're still better with an old Nokia. I had an E50 and an E61 and they both blew any edition of the iPhone away in terms of call quality and battery life... Shame only an archaeologist would have possession of one of those these days...

Sad news.

What a load of absolute dross. The drop to 1600w perhaps I can see but down to 900w? That's ridiculous!

I keep toying with the idea of going back on, but I never really got into it the first time as I didn't manage to find myself a stable guild and just couldn't dedicate any real time to it... where it became a way of life for a lot of friends it stayed just a game for me; I guess that's why I didn't exactly go far!

So his property's been searched... that doesn't imply guilt, it just confirms that an allegation has been made... Hope it's not true, but then again there's not much that'd surprise me these days...

Used them regularly in my last job... never had a problem. Pricing was generally on the ball.

Misco used to be great for random phone calls at the end of the month under at least a couple of the account managers I've corresponded with (I won't go into just how many there were in my last job - thankfully not part of my remit these days). You can always tell when they're not quite up to standard in terms of their numbers!

On HP laptops the flashing CAPS LOCK is usually a sign of a fairly poorly unit. I'd suggest the likelihood of a BIOS/MB failure is there. I have been using an old HP 6735s for months as a Netflix box on my TV and it's been running hot and a couple of days ago finally gave up the ghost with the same symptoms detailed (flashing CAPS LOCK and drives spinning up). I've had to give up on mine as a lost cause. I know on some of the older DV6000/DV9000 models with the NVidia 8600M graphics this was one possible symptom of GPU failure if the chip had failed completely.

Had to have one of these apart to look into repairing the DC connector and noticed the keyboard issue then; I have to say it put me off the prospect of buying a Samsung laptop for myself or recommending that anyone else buy one (which is a shame because some of their other models do look very nice). I would agree that it does look very much like the soldering iron is the way to go...
