I'm the opposite I love it when it's empty. So peaceful and quiet. Really doesn't bother me like it does some people I work with who won't work by themselves/if it's empty. I've got a pic somewhere of the morning light hitting the corridor first thing in the morning, looks really nice.

With all respect everybody's personal life and history is different and there's completely different things in play here. For the record I've worked other places where the IT team is well-respected and valued and included in everything and you felt like part of the company. No place is perfect and we can't have it all ways I guess. We'll just agree to disagree and move on. Especially considering how important mental health is lately https://www.time-to-change.org.uk/talk-about-mental-health/telling-someone-about-your-mental-health-problem not all of us are made of stone, some have issues which have been caused by a lack of support in the workplace in the first place.

Asked to go in to sort out ONE laptop for someone. NO. Do they not read the news?
-
It's going to be interesting now for examples like this - you've tested it and it logs on fine, which clearly shows it's a user error. Now if users are jeopardising staff safety through being numpties, what's the outcome going to be?
-
So is most of ours. In the event of a power cut nobody and nothing will be working, so don't know what I can be expected to do about that. 90% of stuff can be done remotely.

These were before the Coronovirus hit the UK. These were H&S kit to dust out PCs, but with the demand for them due to Coronovirus meant I couldn't get them and I'm still waiting.
-
I'd be concerned from multiple points: Safeguarding- what if you get an angry violent parent? Lone-worker - what if something happens when by yourself? Coronavirus contact from potential infected parents? What I did I set laptops up and told them to collect them directly from Reception which is like in a vestible/airlock type thing. But this was staff, not students.
-
I ordered face masks, boxes of gloves etc before the Coronavirus issue hit and still waiting for the delivery. Especially so in your case if you don't have the proper H&S kit to deal with the risks.

Used Powershell for the first time a couple of weeks ago, to do what I couldn't do in a batch file. Quite impressed.

Working from home today - School is open but apparently there's no pupils in yet for our school, so what's the point? Sorted out some 365 mailbox stuff for the Head remotely. No need at all to go in.
-
Today when asking the Head, I was told to work from home and if there were any problems onsite with the servers etc we'd arrange it/sort it out. All I'd do is call our MSP to sort it anyway if it's something of theirs. Power failure - what can we do? Everything will be off anyway in a prolonged outage. I'm not IT manager but IT Technician (just doing role of IT manager but not paid those wages)

Our head showed me today, was just spinning/very slow to load.

That's my rationale for the 240GBs and always has been.

Staff who constantly report their computer is "slow"
DrBeaker replied to DrBeaker's topic in How do you do....it?
Thanks for all the replies so far folks. Some solid suggestions here. Will read and digest when I get 5x mins! Next thoughts are: * task manager check * network speed link/throughput/port issues -
Our Inventry system was purchased before I got here and was installed on my 3rd day with no-one telling me in advance and nothing to do with me. In hindsight this should have have told me a lot... ah well. Our Inventry system AFAIC is nothing to do with me. I didn't provide the PC etc, it's their responsibility which the school pays for support for. However ours was Windows 10 from day 1 in 2018.

Office 365 Sharepoint which was setup before my time.

Are they company provided mobiles or personal devices?

I went the opposite way to most techs. Went from Vanilla AD to CC4 AD due to job changes. I can see the pros and cons of each method. CC4 does take some burden off the day-to-day stuff so I can focus on solutions instead of admin work. However the other side of that coin is it's sometimes limiting in function compared to Vanilla AD. Don't know how it was in the late 90's/early 00's days but there's definitely more integrated solutions nowadays to rival CC4 but I guess it was quite ahead of it's day at the time. E.g. Impero was ace at one time, but it went downhill.

Staff who constantly report their computer is "slow"
DrBeaker posted a topic in How do you do....it?
OK - Looking to see how others do this or any approaches I could use here. Teacher constantly reports her computer is slow. Computer has been rebuilt before. Upgraded from a HDD and 4GB RAM, to an SSD and 8GB RAM and rebuilt. Still complains it is "slow" and "PowerPoints take ages to load" My testing shows post-upgrade the computer boots in under a minute and logs on in less than two minutes. That's acceptable to me - as it's an HP 8200 Elite SFF that's 8x years old. I've already recommended a new computer, but as that's not going to happen due to budget - what else can I do? No spares due to budget issues at the moment. However this same make/model of computer is the same in all the classrooms. Other classrooms - who have told me post SSD/RAM upgrade theirs is faster than before. Any suggestions, recommendations etc? Thanks -
We use CC4 but it's a licenced package from RM that has multiple benefits. I've worked with Vanilla and CC4 networks and found for some things, CC4 is a lot easier to deal with.

Interesting to follow this as I'm the sole tech onsite and can often go for hours between speaking with people. Even with a site radio one time it was only me who had one, was switched on and I didn't get an answer.

Most times they send the e-payslips to your work provided email account or link that to a portal to login to them. Can't see why they would want to use your personal one for that. Would be nice if they gave us the choice before dictating to us they were moving to e-payslips. Call me old-fashioned but it's only convenience is for admin and HR, not the end user. I'm forever forgetting my password for it.

We've had one today, the National Reference tests. Both problems were with their end of the system. Wrong code for a student and them not following their own instructions. But that's my time I'm having to spend supporting issues with someone else's external system instead of actually being able to help staff.
