While Home Premium cannot be a remote desktop host, it does have the RDP 7 client in it, so you can connect to other remote desktop hosts, such as servers.

Windows 7 Home Premium has Media Centre, Aero plus the base Windows 7 OS. Windows 7 Professional basically is Home Premium plus domain join, offline files, essentially the active directory extensions.

I think all of ours are that one as well, i'll check on Monday. Chances are then if that is the case then there is the same cause. It will be interesting to see if you get the error when you install your AV.

That's useful to know, thanks for that. I'll ditch the idea at our end regarding the TCP/IP offload, and try instead ripping out McAfee on our menus server. Let me know how it goes for you next week, particularly if you get the 2012s during half term. It sounds like you are in the same boat as me! One more thing, does one of your servers that have the 2012s have Hyper-V installed on it? There is an update rollup for Hyper-V, dated 24 August 2010.

Did those TCP offload changes on our 2008 R2 server and that brought it to its knees! Mind you it could have already gone wrong.... I'll do those changes again over half term and test them to ensure good connectivity. I also notice there are 3 other hotfixes relating to Hyper-V, which is on our 2008 R2 box, KBs 981791, 974909 and 981836. I'll probably also try those and see if they make it any better. I think I will do those over half term though, given this morning's experience! We had the 981791 error last night. I'll also test McAfee over half term as well.

Our problem servers aren't DCs, they are member servers. Our 2008 R2 DC does not exhibit this issue. I haven't found the event data all that useful TBH. On my google searches all the event logs show similar byte data, but no real pinpoint to the cause. Interesting you mention McAfee 8.7i - I heard several reports of AV causing this. But then I don't really want to disable AV on servers. Suppose it could be a useful test for a very short time. Trouble is 8.7i is the only McAfee AV that will work on Server 2008 R2. What I have noticed is that the problem servers are ones with a lot of file access on network shares (one is our File server, the other one holds our menus for our redirected desktop/start menu for students), generally with heavy loads the problem appears, but outside of peak times the problem all but vanishes. I'll probably look at the AV route on Friday....

We are having this effect as well on 1 2008 R2 server (PowerEdge R710) and one Storage Server 2008 NAS appliance (PowerVault NX3100). Have tried everything I can think of, updated BIOS, re-installed NIC drivers, check all the settings etc, and I am totally lost. We get around the same frequency, several per hour that tend to happen in groups. RAID drivers/firmware, HDD firmware is all up to date. Our AV is McAfee VirusScan 8.7i Enterprise with patch 4 installed. Anyone have any ideas on what else I should troubleshoot?

I cannot seem to see a certain answer to this on the internet, so I will ask here. When we move to Server 2008 R2 hopefully in the summer we plan to keep our existing 2003 R2 Terminal Server for the interim, which has the latest RDC client that I can see available (6.0). My question is, will we be able to connect to our new 2008 R2 servers remotely through RDP via the 2003 R2 server? I don't want the fancy GUI features, it is just so our LEA can remote into our new servers to install their backup software and configure things like IAS for our wireless. Thanks.

Does it support Office 2007 then, I though that and Office 2010 were fairly similar? I presume they will get round to proper Office 2010 support at some stage soon?

Deny students access to C:\Users\Public folder. It won't cause the freezing on loading the library then. I had that issue and doing this fixed it. Not sure about the Control Panel icon though...... I have tried IE 8 on one of our XP student machines and it generally works fine. However, because we do not have Windows Search 4 (student machines don't need it) we keep getting a banner saying "download Windows Search 4 for faster searching of history and favorites". Has anyone managed to suppress this little message from appearing (preferably by GPO)? I tried disabling the Windows search URL policy, but this makes no difference. I have put in an Impero block to the KB article it links to, but I naturally prefer if this message did not show up at all !

The black background is caused by this: KB977944 . You can request a patch for this issue. Control Panel icon I believe is caused by the 'Force Classic Start Menu' policy which you will no doubt have applied because of your XP/Vista machines. If you can remove this policy then it may cure your third issue as well. Is your start menu a re-directed one?

I stopped installing .NET framework by GPO after we had endless issues. We put it in the base image, and manually install the machines not recently re-imaged that need it.

A 'Lock Screen when Network cable unplugged' option on a classroom management system like Impero would confuse them, they will get a lock screen which will frustrate them. They'll soon give up when they cannot access their home directory either when they do plug the network cable back in! The best thing though is on Dell Latitude Laptops, I found out the other day you can disable the wireless switch or hot key on D520 or newer. So the wireless is always on and they cannot turn it off! The desktop is less foolproof, though made considerably easier with the cable clamps on the RM Ones clamping the network cable in place on the back plate.

I didn't know until now Dell did an all-in-one PC. I can't seem to see if the monitor is a hard one though.

We found the older RM Ones to be unreliable but the newer ones are a lot better.

I have a weird issue with SketchUp 7 under a student account on any OS - XP, Vista or 7. Whenever I try and save to the root of My Documents of a student user, it crashes SketchUp and loses the file created. In addition, under XP only I get a message on clicking Save As "\\server\share" is not accessible. Saving under sub folders of My Docs works fine, and if you save to the root of drive U: (the drive letter of the student's home folder), the same location as My Documents with the same permissions, it also works fine. Anyone else had this issue? It's a bizarre one, at present we are OK to just tell students to not try and save in the root of My Docs, but would be nice to eliminate this weird crash!
