File > Word Options > Advanced > Save - try the option 'Copy the remote file to your computer, and update the remote file when saving'. Fixed a load of our woes with Word 2003, it's our standard setting now when we deployed Office 2010, and we have never had an issue.

As a follow up to this post, Impero 4.0.04 works on Windows 8 fine now.

I have tried searching around but I am getting nowhere. I am wondering if it is possible to add a command to a sysprep file to install an application during the sysprep process, without having to use MDT? I have existing Windows 7 images with already configured sysprep files, i'd just like to add a command to install our new AV (Symantec Endpoint). Anybody managed this? Or will I have to re-engineer my images to use MDT?

Typical! Nothing ever stays the same! Must be a different manufacturer of motherboard than the ASUS ones that are in the 2020Bs. The only other thing is to use High Performance power setting which runs the CPU at 100% all the time. But it's not the same as actively disabling it in the BIOS.

If it's the same BIOS then I think it's in Integrated Peripherals > CPU Feature. But my memory of these is so vague! EDIT: Sorry, it's Advanced BIOS Features > CPU Feature. Disable C1E and SpeedStep.

I don't know whether this is related to the same issue but we have some Ascend 2020Bs of the same generation and began randomly freezing when we installed Windows 7 on them (ours are maxed out to 2GB). I found out it was because of Intel SpeedStep kicking in on the old P4s that are in them. I disabled SpeedStep and also C1E on the CPU feature in the BIOS and they are as solid as a rock now.

Hence why I am keeping my Windows 8 test PCs within the confines of the server office at the moment, in fact in VMs even!

Presumably there is an issue with the Metro version of IE and the BHO is there?

Not yet. I contacted Impero regarding this, they are working on Windows 8 support for sometime in the first half of this year.

You need to Enable the Group Policy in Computer Configuration\System\Logon 'Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon'. This should fix the issue.

This is the sort of thing I am getting at: Description of an update rollup for the printing core components in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 This update roll up for the print core components replaces several other updates that had been individual hotfixes. I am wondering if we will see more updates like this instead of service packs for Win 7?

Plus I am sure that several of the current hotfixes could be rolled up into update rollup packs....

I think we need more cumulative updates for the key components for Windows 7, like cumulative security updates (akin to the IE ones) and update rollups. I did a test install of Windows 7 SP1 from RTM on Windows Update and it took over an hour! That's why I don't deploy it through WSUS - it would cause anarchy. We generally now either install SP1 separately or re-image the PC to an SP1 build. Having cumulative updates would prevent the number of updates for a clean SP1 install reaching sky high levels. This would be fine if Microsoft would incorporate the ton of hotfixes for Win 7 SP1 that you currently have to separately request into tested update rollups.

That's why I am becoming a big fan of SSDs.....

Yeah, I have some pig out plans already! Just involves getting Windows 7 64-bit going fully on our network.... Shame it would involve re-imaging our Staff Laptops to 64-bit though.

I disable 'Move contents to the new location' for all our user GPOs for folder redirection. No issues for us. Speeds up things a little as it doesn't spend ages copying files from the network drive, default user profile etc, it just changes the pointer in User Shell Folders. It'll still make new Documents, Pictures folders etc which are empty in the new location. Test it for a dummy user first, just to put your mind at rest. Looks nice your plan, hope it works out.

Our P4s with 2GB RAM run CS5.5. Not quick but usable.
