hi we just have a rm smartcache and on the exchange server we have Symantec antivirus and Symantec Mail security

we have an adsl2 line with 20Mpbs down and 0.4Mpbs up

the actual speed is 20Mbps I have just done some more tests and it seems that any external mail is causing the internet speed to drop significantly, even when only 2 or 3 messages are being sent. Any suggestions?

i am looking to upgrade the line as soon as possible. Have also done much research into this. It is just annoying that this is causing such a strain on the internet.

I have done some testing and it seems that it is the exchange server that is causing these issue. It may be when mail merges are being sent out. Do you have any ideas on how to stop this from grinding the internet to a halt?

I would, disconnect just like you, however this keeps happening in the middle of the day; normally by the afternoon when i can unplug bits the speed is back up. It is so frustrating. for example today the speed dropped at 12, and has just come back up now before School has ended and before i can do the testing.

Hi, I have been having this really annoying issue where the internet seems to drop to an unusable speed say 0.4Mbps. When I do ping tests these either drop out or take an unusually long time. I can still ping the router no problem. Each time this happens i have been going to the router and performing a Cross over test and the speeds are coming back just as they should with no drop in speed and all ping tests are coming back. the router has been replaced two times and upgraded to a Cisco 2800 series; however this issue keeps occurring. I have been onto the main switch and even reset this to its default settings. I also reset the router and this does not improve the speed. any help will be much appreciated as the slow internet is driving me mad! Not to mention all the teachers! Thanks James

I have managed to fix the issue!!!!! I reset the main switch to factory defaults and this did not work; however i managed to find the port from the MAC address. I chased this back around the school and it lead me to a small switch cab that i did not know about (was not mentioned on the handover or networking diagram!) This was the Cisco Lynksys switch. Hard rebooted and did nothing, so managed to get onto the console of the switch; low and behold this had a static ip of 192.168.1.254. I changed this and the DHCP etc then updated the firmware and tested the 192.168.1.x range. all is now working!! Thank you all for your help in resolving this!

OK, I will backup the current config and do a hard reset on the switch on Monday evening so I don't take net network down during school hours. I will keep you all posted!

Hi, I have performed the test as you requested and i can see that i have two different MAC addresses for my gateway router address when changing ip ranges. I have tried to locate this mac address, even unplugged the internet from the switch and then performed the arp -a test and i still get the default gateway ip address coming up with this odd MAC address that i cannot locate anywhere. I have downloaded a mac address scanner and this has given me the same results. any other ideas are much appreciated as I am all out now. My last thought is the switch. Could this be the cause of all this trouble?

i have looked through all of my switches (Cisco sg200) and can not find the mac address anywhere.. All wireless devices are TP Link. or netgear.

yes the DNS has a reverse look up zone for 192.168.1.x subnet

In this case all that is between the pc is the main switch. In regards to the arp-a question raised by David Tindall. I have set a static ip of 192.168.0.157 and performed arp-a and the mac address for 192.168.1.254 is 04-fe-7f-5a-9b-cb the static ip has then been set to 192.168.1.150 and i have performed arp-a and got the mac address for 192.168.1.254 as 00-1a-70-8d-ae-74 this is showing two different mac addresses. Weird!

Hi Synkrox,I have spoken to RM (who host the router and have access to it) and they state that this is running on 255.255.254.0. I have used a cross over cable and plugged a laptop directly into the router and used the DNS server address they have given me and my ip address of 192.168.1.150 and this works. So i do not believe it is a config error on the router!

ive just taken over the network at the school and this was the state I found it in; not the greatest. The subnet mask has already been set to 255.255.254.0. This was all created by the dreaded RM network technicians I believe

Hi All, Just a quick question (hopefully!) On my network we have one DHCP server; the ip address starts at 192.168.0.1 and ends at 192.168.1.254 with a subnet mask of 255.255.254.0. Any machine that connects with an ip address in the 192.168.0. range can connect to the internet with no problems, however any machine that is assigned an ip in the 192.168.1. range cannot access the internet at all. I cannot ping 8.8.8.8 or bbc.co.uk or even perform a tracert. I can however ping the router at 192.168.1.254. I have spoken to the internet providers and they have assured me that the router is set to the same 255.255.254.0 range. Any advice would be much appreciated as we are constantly running our of room on the DHCP Scope. cheers guys!!
