Virtualizing server suggestions
xxlonewolfxx123 replied to xxlonewolfxx123's topic in Learning Network Manager
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, am very keen on getting a second DC running however only currently have one physical server. As for the virtualization it sounds like running Hyper-V Server is the best route. Thanks. -
Virtualizing server suggestions
xxlonewolfxx123 replied to xxlonewolfxx123's topic in Learning Network Manager
Are you suggesting to use Hyper-V Server or just install Hyper-V Feature on Server 2016 and have 3 VMS on that? -
Hiya, Looking for opinions on how to get the most from our current setup. We have a Dell T620 X2 CPUs 32GB RAM 4 X 278GB in RAID 5 2 X 931GB in RAID 1 Running Two Hyper-V VMS (One Print Server and One Miscellaneous) The Physical server is the only DC and runs DCHP, DNS, MDT/WDS, File Server and uses Windows Server Backup to backup the entire server including VMS to a 2TB USB2.0 HDD. What would your recommendations on this setup be? How would you have it setup? I was thinking running Hyper-V server on the Physical server and having three VMs take the places of the above and possibly moving to VEEAM backup along with a NAS or new USB 3.0 HDDs. I would like a smooth backup/restore operation for if the DC goes down so open to suggestions.

Haha ok then, cannot even remember where I found it, must have been about three years ago when I used it last but it did sort of work.

Just realised I contradicted myself by saying we do not use scripts then said what script we use, what I meant was we Used to use the attached script at my previous school which did sometimes have some issues so went onto using MSI. However give it a go as it may just work for others.
-
This is the script we use, I take no credit for the making of it as I found it online. All we had to do was dump the fonts in a shared folder where it is accessible to Staff and get this to run on login/start up etc. Font Install.vbs
-
I tried using scripts however never got it to work fully, I ended up using Advanced Installer and then deploying the MSI.

Luckily ours is stabilising now due to moving a majority over to mandatory, I have found this quite painless due to the only thing a profile would of normally saved was bookmarks in Chrome (that staff would notice) but I have now redirected this pretty much making roaming profiles obsolete in our environment. We do however have to start again now figuring out what route to take for Windows 10 profiles, most likely local due to this is most peoples recommendation.

windows 10 Start Menu - How is everyone else doing iT?
xxlonewolfxx123 replied to JVSuper's topic in Windows 10
I pretty much gave up on trying to use the standard windows 10 start menu as it would not open and could not figure out why. We have now setup successfully Classic shell which works very well but would obviously love to just use the standard Win 10 menu. -
Have ended up gradually changing affected staff members to Mandatory profiles however we will also be migrating to Windows 10 soon anyway. - - - Updated - - - Profiles are deleted using a script with delprof upon shutdown, have moved affected staff to mandatory profiles however migrating to Windows 10 soon.

Any Idea on where this GPO is for the "normal" ones Just done the Intel one as Registry edit. -

Ok thanks, I wonder if it was a script of some sort as I am sure you would have programs like Intel HD Graphics icon etc that cannot be hidden using GPO if there was an option. -

Would be interested to perhaps see an example of your start menu layout .xml for Win10 as mine was a bugger which is why I resorted to ClassicShell atm. -

I am sure I could find this somewhere however which policy did you use to hide certain taskbar icons on the right-hand side please? as it seems you only have One. -

Wow DaveP talk about limiting desktop icons! Rob_D I find it looks messy as well as I have had so many staff saying they cannot find a shortcut so would like to simplify it for Win10. -

Haha the theme may change yet however I can see the bonus of having it actually say Start due to users not knowing what the start menu is. Ok thanks. -

It sure is, I am playing with ClassicShell as the Windows 10 start menu with GPO's seems to be complete trash on our system. -

This is currently how our Windows 10 desktop is looking (bearing in mind I have not finished all GPOS etc and blanked our our school logo/name). -
Currently I am working on getting our school migrated to Windows 10 and am looking at the Redirected desktop as I am overhauling everything. We currently have an extremely messy desktop with shortcuts to websites, all office shortcuts, shared drive shortcuts and loads of random programs. Now I hate this and want to tidy it up however seeing as we are unable to do any sort of auto-arrange by file type or A-Z (as I am unable to find a way to do this?) then I am interested in how everyone else has their desktops and what shortcuts do you have on your desktop and do you put all office shortcuts into a folder on there to reduce the amount? Cheers for all Input.

Hiya All, We are getting this problem more and more. I seem to be deleting at least 1 profile a day (bearing in mind we only have a user base of around 110 students and 140 staff) from the server and letting it re-create due to "The Group policy Client service failed the login. Access is denied" coming up for our domain users. We have roaming profiles for Staff and Mandatory for Students. Profiles automatically get deleted every time the computer restarts so its nice and fresh for next time straight from the server but we still seem to be getting this very annoying issue, does anyone have any hints and tips on managing this apart from changing to mandatory? Thanks,
