Please forgive me if this in the wrong section but I've just spent the last 5 minutes trying to decide where to put it and i'm not changing my mind again If you were about to walk in a new job that you knew pretty much nothing about the network, what kind of documentation would you hope to find there? From the basics such as IP details up to more advanced bits such as GPO settings etc Cheers all

Good man, thankyou very much

Is anyone else having trouble downloading the toolbar remover? All I get is an empty .zip file That coupled with the fact the removal instructions are blocked here as a Social Networking site means i'm a little stumped

Using Spiceworks at one school and it runs pretty well. A little slow at first but it was scanning the whole network for the first time so excusable lol I do have one slight problem with it though and that's to do with scanning. When it does it's scheduled scan it seems to fail to probe and pickup the details of the majority of devices. However when I rescan them manually in the Inventory it works perfectly Will have to play around some more but if anyone's come across that and fixed it, would be much appreciated to know how

Thanks all, some things to think about there. The main reason behind wanting to use WSUS is to stop having the manually check, download and then apply all the updates every so often. Normally they end up being during a holiday as my time at the school is manic during the term. I assume that xml file is updated automatically somehow everytime the management console is opened? Anyway to implement that into WSUS for CC3?

Immidio Flex Profiles is something I've used with mandatory profiles before moving over to Roaming. Might do what you need There is a free version by Login Consultants but I can't seem to find that now. Let me know if you want it and I'm sure I can ping it over to you.

User logging utilities - Any free or cheap ones to recommend
gotenks1321 replied to number34's topic in Wireless Networks
One I found on here a while back and have been using at a number of schools Add this VBScript to run on login: And this VBScript to run at logoff: And finally run this batch as a task each night to tidy up the days records into an archive: Then you will have a text file created for each user when they login which will be updated everytime they logon and logoff with the computer name. You will also have the same for each computer that is logged onto with the username of the person that has logged into it. You'll have to excuse the description, it's a bit early and my brain isn't working properly yet -
Apologies if this is in the wrong place but couldn't find anywhere else that seemed more fitting. Now in light of CC4 using WSUS to connect to RM's servers and then push out the approved updates, what about CC3? Would it not be possible to setup a WSUS install and then point that to RM instead of Microsoft for all of the windows updates? Now i've not looked into how it works in CC4 at the moment but just had this thought running around in my head Cheers

No like option so will have to go with the thanks Thinking back to the hall install that's going on, might just have to bring the 360 in with Guitar Hero. Purely for testing purposes of course

In until 23rd at a couple of schools, nice big hall projector and wireless installs going on and then off until 4th Jan. Snow day so working at home now until I go and jump start my car so I can go enjoy some MR driving in this snow with the roof down

I believe, from when I was playing with WDS, you must sysprep the volume you want to capture before it will show up and allow you to select it. Have you syspreped it already?

Safe mode and check event logs? Boot from a PE environment disc to do the same (is that even possible?)

I've been thinking about SLAs recently but it's slightly harder for me as I roam around to 5 different schools on a set timetable. Does anyone do anything similiar and could lend some advice? Is it even possible to have a SLA for somewhere that you only support for half a day a week or even half a day a fortnight

Not seen that in a while. He is very good live. Was lucky enough to get tickets to see him this year when he played his only UK show at the Apollo, very very good. Have managed to get tickets to see him again next year at the London O2 too

New Server/Domain - what would you do?
gotenks1321 replied to CHR1S's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
I'm hoping to be in the same situation in the next couple of months and plan on building and running the 2k8 DC alongside the existing 2k3 and migrating everything over as and when the time comes. Seems the best way to keep downtime to a minimum and also keeping the existing server running incase of problems. -
Same as, my HDD is at 5.9 and then VGA at 6.0 and 6.1

WinVNC Package and deploy via AD
gotenks1321 replied to gotenks1321's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Thanks Steve Just downloaded so I shall have a look at that tonight -
Howdy all, May not be entirely win2k3 relevant but is to a certain degree as I wish to deploy from the server Does anyone know if it's possible to package up WinVNC into an MSI ready to deploy out over the network? I've had a quick search and come up with nothing but there may be something out there I've missed. Cheers

Edit an MSI to copy a folder during install
gotenks1321 replied to dgsmith's topic in How do you do....it?
On a similiar note, what do you all use to create MSIs/MSTs? I'm just starting looking at using AD to deplot software since we've gone over to a vanilla network so am looking for some free software to use. I have experience on CC3 with creating packages so it's not a completely new topic thankfully And thanks for the SMART Admin installer, that will solve a few problems -
I use it at home with 2 RAID5 arrays, one for media and the other for ESX storing virtual machines. Took 5 minutes to install and setup on a HDD and once you get used to the basics it's pretty easy to configure any arrays, extra shares etc. All the info I've ever needed was direct from their site

My first technical post here so go easy on me A bit of background info first just to set the scene. I'm working on a peer to peer network with a file server and need to lock things down a bit more than they are at the moment. There are around 30ish machines each with 5 local users. Each user has the same desktop with folders for each subject group (you can see the problem already ). We have countless problems with folders being moved, background images being changed and just the machines generally getting messed up. I've now got the local GPO set to basically how I want it but need to now copy it from the one machine to the rest on the network. I have the GroupPolicy folder in C:\Windows\System32 and have copied that to a safe place, however the problem I have now is the Administrator user on the machine also has been locked down by these settings Is it possible to exclude certain users from the GPO settings? TIA
