  1. Have you looked at spiceworks, Free IT Community, Help Desk, and Network Monitoring - Spiceworks Its free and you can automate startup and shutdown, not to sure if you can cancel it though but as it does work via a scheduled task you could cancel the task to stop it I suppose.
  2. What configuration is needed to set up a UTM1000 for firewall and web filtering, We are about to order it but they want £600 to do the install and I cant see it would take that long so just wondered what is involved and weather or not I could save the school the £600.
  3. We use a programme called netsupport; Welcome to the home of NetSupport it give the teachers the option of classroom control but also has a technician console, this means that if people do leave pc’s on I can not only connect to them but turn them off, restart or with the aid of pxe boot turn the pc’s on for them, it’s a fantastic programme.
  4. When they are reset the default IP is 192.168.1.1 if you give your laptop an address in that range and cable straight to it then it should work. Unless it’s either not resetting properly or the reset switch has been disabled in the config to stop others resetting it. If you connect it to the network, download and install engenius locator from the following link; EnGenius locator program resets AP and finds lost IP address If the AP is working this will find it and allow you to reset it back to factory defaults.
  5. Hi there, do you still have the trolleys available as my school has a beaten up old 30 bay unit but sadly were not in a position to purchase a new one at the moment due to other projects.
  6. Can somebody please recommend a good data recovery utility,I wiped the assistant heads laptop last week after he said there was nothing on it he needed, now it turns out there was a folder on there that could really do with being recovered. I have used some recovery tools before that were not that impressive so wondered if anyone could advise on a piece of software that might be able to do it.
  7. Where looking at a product called 'splashtop' had a trial with it on ipads controlling windows 7 laptops and had great success. Remote PC access software. Remote login for remote desktop | Splashtop
  8. The school has had such bad experiences with wireless in the past so while we are not paying for it why not order the 3050 and 7982 ap's.
  9. Thanks guys I will take your info into my meeting at 1030 today and see what they say.
  10. PM sent.
  11. Do you notice any difference in performance with the wall mounted and ceiling mounted AP's.
  12. I did look at the new AC access points but a couple of companies have told me to avoid them.
  13. Well I spoke to the head today and it looks like I am about to get the authority to order a ZD3050 and 25*7982 Ap's which will put one in each classroom and leave 3 spare to jot round other areas of the school. I know there is a lot of people on this forum that use Ruckus but I just wanted to know were you mount your ap's ?? as today I was told for best reception to the wireless devices to mount them on the ceiling as we are only a single story building, but is this where everyone else mounts them or do you wall mount them ??
  14. 1800 ap's are you providing wifi for the whole of Essex ???
  15. Thanks or that guys I might buy one to put on the laptop trolley and aske the staff to plug it in before they use the trolley if performance is good it could save me a fortune
  16. I don't really know much about that system is it easy to setup and are the AP's then managed centrally ???
  17. That sounds really cheap if they technology is better why is that ??? also why does it need a dedicated server ???
  18. I am about to receive a budget which must be spent on infrastructure of around £20K, our current wireless solution is awfull and I am looking to replace it, I will be needing around 22 AP's to be situated around the school. My choices have been narrowed down to either the following; Meraki cloud controller with 22 MR24 Ap's or Ruckus 3000 ZD and 25 of the 7982 Ap's (there are 25 of these because I believe that's whats in the offer). Whilst I do like Meraki's cloud controller it does seem very expensive especially with the extra licence cost every 3 years which would work out at around another £4K every 4 years. But I have also been told that the throughput of the 7982 is around 450 Mbps compared to the MR24 at 900 Mbps. Has anybody ever compared the two systems, if you forget about the cost which is actually the better system ???

I am looking for a little guidance and other administrators experience please, I am looking at replacing 4 3-com 10\100 switches with GB alternatives. I am after 48 port managed switches, POE would be a bonus for future wireless considerations. The switches are in 4 separate cabs across the school Many Thanks.
  22. Has anybody actually ever resigned before they got there first pay packet ??? I got that really fed up feeling today, after managing to get my school £40,000 they wasn't expecting I find out they have cut my budget. They money will be paid as £20,000 this month to spend on IT and then £20,000 next April to spend on IT, on top of that I should have had a £35,000 per year budget giving me £55,000 a year for the next 2 years, happy days I hear you say. But now I find out that as they see I have £20k to spend I don't need the budget anymore any will be allocating me £400 a month for IT, I can't do anything with that, I even have restrictions on what I can spend the £20k a year on as well. Never actually resigned before my first payday before but I'm damn close at the moment.
  23. I must admit both the IT Co-ordinator any myself where taken back by how much weight was in the unit, the chap that came to see us claimed that with the keyboard dock it would have aroun 8 hours battery life. And one thing that I did like about these units is they came with a VGA port and in internal NIC, although after closer inspection it would seem the the NIC is a 10\100 USB unit.
  24. What do you mean by 14 and CPU fan ??? as a company called ergo have offered me an i5 at a really good price; http://www.ergo.co.uk/Products/Tablets/Pages/Ergo_Hybrid.aspx
  25. I am looking to invest in around 25 tablet hybrids where the screen can detatch from the keyboard, preferably with an integrated 1GB NIC. Does anybody else have any experience with these and coule either advise which to look at or which to avoid, also must be capable of running Windows 7 or 8 Pro and not be running Windows RT.
