Matt40k, Thanks for the info. I don't think scholar pack do a free version anymore and had a look at some of the open source ones, SchoolTool being one of them. FreeMIS was another but that's not been worked on for ages. Might have to give it a go and try and kick something off. It's only for a very small school that only really needs a very basic system in place to replace their current methods. Thanks

Hi, Need a really simple MIS type database for keeping pupils details in etc. I think I remember someone saying they had written their own Access Database for pupils at their school but I can't find the thread. Just need something simple otherwise I've found a students template database in the MS site. Thanks
-
Primary school ... Ours is pretty much how elsiegee40 explains her school used to be. What MIS did you go for elsiegee40? Excel will probably help. Think I've seen some templates on the web. Was hoping someone might be doing something similar that we could crib Thanks so far for the help and advice.

No. Since the school is pretty small most of MIS is done separately. Am looking to at least get them to do registers electronically. Thanks

Hi We're a very small school that currently uses paper registers for attendance. Does anyone have or know of some free software that will do am and pm daily registers? Or even if you've written something yourselves. Ive looked at schooltool which looks like a whole MIS solution .... but I dont trust my linux skills that much yet. Any help please. Thanks

Hi, If anyone is getting rid of older PCs then our small community school would be really grateful for any bits and pieces of kit going please. Base Units, Monitors, Mice ... anything that might help our ageing IT setup. We're located in Gloucestershire. PM me if you can help. Many thanks

Hi, Is xable.net a genuine site? Is it OK to use for it's Post SP3 XP update pack. Thanks

Hi Am building a brand new domain and was wondering how much everyone locks down their PCs. Anyone willing to share their AD group policy settings for me to use as a starting point? Thanks

Thanks for the replies. A couple of things really. The PCs do have on demand scanning but I want to put an extra level of checking in after some nasty virus problems last year. It's only a very small school so not to concerned if they have to spend 5-10ins scanning their USBs. It'll teach them a lesson ... ;-) Thanks for the link, will look at it. Just want them to put their USBs in and then click a button to say scan now. Just thought someone would have done this previously. Also want to use something similar in a community centre. Think it would be really handy there for anyone to use. Thanks ... more advice please?

I'm thinking of putting in a sheepdip machine for staff/students to virus check USBs or CDs etc BEFORE they put them into network PCs. So I have a basic PC which will have 'Steady State' on but am wondering how to do the virus scan bit. I'm thinking of having a simple little app with a few buttons on to do, say Scan USB, Scan CD etc. So shall I use command line scanners? Maybe use 2 different ones? Them how do I make my app from this. I'm guessing people have already done something like this. Your valuable advice again please!

Have just installed iTalc 2 on a couple of school PCs but it looks a bit different to the earlier versions, and I cannot find any information on what/how to configure to get it working with master/client. Their wiki has info on the earlier versions but version 2 suggests that it can be done either by keys or permissions. Does anyone have any definitive install/config instructions for version 2 please? Thanks

Benjie, Apologies for not getting back to you yesterday but it was bit of a manic Monday this week in my land of Citrix woes!!! Anyway, the version of reg.exe (not regedit.exe) we use is 5.1.2600.0 according to the version info on the exe, so try looking for that (maybe W2K version?) and using that. The syntax for reg.exe is a bit different but should be pretty simple - hopefully it will do the trick for you. HTH
-
Two ways that I think you can get round this problem: 1)... Use and older version of reg.exe - cant remember which version, but can check when I'm back at work on Monday. This still allows users to run reg.exe even if registry editing is disabled. or 2)... Use a .vbs script to change the reg keys you want. HTH

Hi, Got the following for is anyones interested. I've put rough prices (from ebay) by them but if anyones got anything they want to trade for these then that'd be more useful for the school: New: HP Color Laserjet Toner C4194A - Yellow - £10 (x3) HP Color Laserjet Toner C4193A - Magenta - £10 HP Color Laserjet Fuser Kit 4500/4550 - C4198A - £25 HP Color Laserjet Transfer Kit 4500/4550 - C4196A - £20 HP Color Laserjet Drum Kit - C4195A - £40 Used: HP Color Laserjet 1600 Printer - £60 (Might need new toner in one or two) Ideally trade for anything at all really: PCs, Switches, Memory etc anything that might be of use to the school. Thanks e-class

Can anyone point me in the direction of writing a quick script (or do it for me, please) of moving the profile location for a domain user .... this is an NT4 domain though ... no laughing please!!! So, for all students I want to move their profile from: \\server\share\profiles$\username to \\server\share\profiles$\username\%PROFILELOCATION% or does anyone have know of any free software like Hyena etc that can move profiles en masse? Many thanks

I *think* that the following anti-virus products are free for school use: Free Firewall - Download the Best Firewall Protection and Anti-Virus Scan Software from Comodo and PC Tools AntiVirus - Free Anti Virus Download and Removal

I'm assuming you are getting the 'eval error' when trying to run the RDP client. If so, then the easiest thing would be to to reinstall the RDP client. Try: Remote Desktop Connection (Terminal Services Client 6.0) Download and then install for your OS. HTH

But is it 'free' for use on school computers rather than just on Home PCs? Has anyone read the smallprint/EULA?
-
So, has anyone had a chance of loading this (FET) software and trying it? I'm assuming that as it is on schoolforge then it should be pretty safe to install? It has a .ro address which I think must be Romania - safe to use do you think? Thanks
-
Was just browsing schoolforge.net and came across: FET Anyone seen/used this at all?

Hi, Does anyone have any recommendations for software for making up a school timetable .... preferably free software please? I've seen some room booking stuff which is pretty good but want something that will create timetables for the school. Any ideas? Thanks

If you are talking about an RDP session to a server which goes pear shaped and you then have to log on to that server again then the easiest way would be to do the following: 1)... From a DOS prompt type "quser". 2)... This gives you a list of connected sessions with session IDs 3)... Identify the dodgy session ID and type 'logoff '. You can also check remote servers as well by doing: quser /server: which gives you information about connected sessions for the specified server. See: Query user for a more in depth look at quser.
