Hi Phil, i believe your statement is incorrect, as all the xml files generated with SIMS.net have this hard coded into every document. The line forces Internet explorer to open the xml in word. I have tried to change the association of word.document in the registry From HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Filter\text/xml Word.Document = application/msword to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Filter\text/xml Word.Document = application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text this would allow xml file to be opened in open office but this doesn't work as internet explorer displays a blank page, it doesn't work with any other Microsoft product even write or notepad. I have even changed xml files to be opened in firefox but as is non-standard html firefox ignores it. The only work around is to open the file in word and save as a doc/odt file then this can be open office. But there is still a reliance on Microsoft word. How is it possible to charge as the documentation is free to enable writing back as per your website? Also this documentation is incomplete we have requested from David, the reason given the documentation is incomplete captia are awaiting the becta report in june to finish the documentation. We have requested the original documentation as it was written in sept 2007 but this also apparently doesn't exist. Can you shed some light on this appearing (for companies that flash the cash) and disappearing (if a school asks for it)? We have also given the lea and capita assurances we will cover costs in regards to data corruption caused by the custom interface but still nothing.

We're Currently evaluating Uniservity. We're part of the first phase of the roll out. I have to agree with the above statement unless your a primary school where is it has more of a use. My advise is if your a secondary school don't waste your time with it, moodle is a better option. There is limited integration with sims with will be extended in the next few weeks when i release a vb script to AD and SIMS.net with all the feilds required by moodle. I also have the documentation for the IMS interface of SIMS.net, i will be looking to create some moodle modules to make the integration better with sims.net with the end goal to allow moodle to write back to SIMS.net once capita finish the writing back part of IMS

Just to clarify the integration we were told about by uniservity was that we would be able to write back data into assessment manager in about septemberish at the earliest but http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/18217-moodle-smis-2.html#post184662 a capita bod has confirmed that this is not currently possible as the feature hasn't been created in IMS.

Uniservity is a very poor VLE for Secondary Schools, it is better suited for primary schools. Moodle is currently head shoulders and a large ladder ahead of uniservity. As for the "Local Authorities (LAs) and schools will benefit from the simplified management and reduced workload of integrating ‘real-time’ Capita SIMS.net pupil data directly into the dynamic teaching and learning environment of the UniServity cLc (connected Learning communities) Learning Platform." This will be available when i find the end of a piece of string, uniservity use this as a major selling point and it isn't available until the earliest September but no guarantee! We have been able to get hold of the SIMS.net IMS integration documentation and hopefully look to implement a moodle module to allow write back to sims in the months ahead, once ready we will release to the community. If this happen uniservity will be hard pressed to get people to move from moodle to uniservity. sorry rant over.

Hi Phil, I have found the documentation i was looking in the wrong place in the capita support website. Is there any implication for support from capita via our lea if we implement data write back via IMS? Thanks

I have looked for resource 507 but this doesn't exist on the support.capitaes.co.uk website. We have also email david grashoff about the documentation and have received incomplete documentation, the reason given was capita is awaiting the becta report. The documentation has existed at some point, as there are web pages within the zip sent with links to sub folders and documents but these are missing. Phil can you shed some light on why the documentation is missing? Will it be possible to get the original version to see the process even if it changes because of the becta report on interoperability?

We have thought about joining another project and push it forward. We have looked at 4/5 School MIS's and talked to the creators and they have liked the idea of a os independent web based super project that will pull together the ideas, features, best practice from their projects into a consolidated effort. We have talked about a number of reason to start from scratch and some for not. Ian

It could but doubt it as there is a precedent with Exchange and OpenExchange (I'm no legal expert). There is also another project called openSIMS (The Open Source Security Infrastructure Management System) they would also need to sue them. The name is not fixed i only coined it OpenSIMS as most people in education have heard of SIMS and when wanted to create an open source version. Ian
