  1. Hi all, going to buy some more memory for my server. Gone to Mr Memory and found ram upgrades for my dell t610 memory options include;- 1333Mhz ECC unbuffered 1333Mhz EEC registered 1066Mhz EEC registered I found it odd that 1066Mhz is more expensive than 1333 Dell PowerEdge T610 Memory RAM Upgrades - FREE Delivery & Guaranteed Compatible | Mr Memory® Is this just as it's less available? I just didn't get it. Am I missing some reason why 1066 is a better option?
  2. Fixed it - DNS issue, the server with IIS 7.5 was looking for DNS on the old server as primary and another as secondary. I removed the old DNS server details completely. I changed the DNS server in the network cards IP settings for the other domain controller/DNS etc. and it worked immediately.
  3. It reports back its failed the syslog test. But I know this is because I have a few unresolved errors on the server in question (print server failed documents) What do I need to remove manually I don't know where to start really?
  4. And I'm back to having this fault. Demoted the DC and turned it off and the problem starts again on some computers but not others. Anyone any ideas?
  5. I remove all printers at logoff by script then use GPO to add them by computer or by user dependant on need.
  6. It's sorted now. I have turned off the old DC and IIS is working. It appears it just took a further reboot of IIS with the old DC turned off.
  7. AD forest isn't recognised. its a server 2003 box i'm planning to remove it that means anything. Its not the Global catalogue. I don't get this I was always under the impression the reason you have multiple DC's is so when one fails. others take the slack. its not a problem for logging on etc. I've tested this as part of my disaster recovery plan. But what I never considered is IIS authenticating through it.
  8. It is not the operations master it gives you the option underneath to change the server to operations master. Essentially do I have to demote the DC?
  9. Secondary in that it is not a primary domain controller. Not all my servers are AD servers I don't fully understand what your asking? Surely if I turn it off it then reboot the IIS Server it should seek a different source of authentication, if not how do I tell IIS/server2008r2 to authenticate from a different server.
  10. not demoted yet. but it is the secondary controller.
  11. HI All, odd one. I am decommissioning an old server 2003 which is a domain controller (secondary) and I have a server 2008r2 box that runs my IIS 7.5. I turned off the server 2003 yesterday and then Authentication failed for IIS 7.5 My intranet, wiki, myphp etc. all failed to authenticate until I turned the old server back on. (401 error I think) I tried rebooting the server 2008 and restarting websites etc. while the old server was off in case it was still trying to authenticate through the old one. Any ideas what this is. Its likely just some cache want clearing but I can't think what. and don't know how to frame this as a question for google.
  12. cancel smart deploy its perfect but it has the perfect price too...... They should wear a striped jumper and a mask. It looks like I'm just going to have a million images as MDT is utter rubbish. There is no where near enough automation.
  13. Does anyone know how to turn off the smart product update with regedit I have the keys in software\WOW6432node\Smart Technologies\product update there is a dword CheckUpdates set to hex 1 what would you change it to to be off? if it is as simple as that.
  14. Found something that claims to do nearly everything. Smart Deploy claims it can make one image for all machines. it does it by creating an image from windows disk and it separates all the drivers for different models. it does its own sysprep and applys the drivers needed. you can then add the image file to WDS so it applys with PXE boot. still no availablity to to deploy from the server. I am enquireing to see if it will deploy with fog. Also lookijg at pricing will probably be a non starter if it costs too much.
  15. Been watching some videos and WDS looks TERRIBLE!!! Does it actually allow me to reimage a machine from the server or do I have to go and sit at it.
  16. when you install WDS and stick your OS's in can you deploy them through the MDT console? i.e. can I add a mac address tell it to install windows 7 then the list of applications for a group for example.
  17. Hi all, I am soon going to upgrade our last server 2003r2 to server 2012. the main role of this will be a secondary DC,DHCP,DNS etc. (the basic stuff) I have been using fog for the last few years mainly as I create an image and I can deploy it within 20 mins this has simplified things. However its becoming more complicated with drivers etc meaning I require multiple images every time motherboard dies and I have to replace it with a slightly different one, its still a problem even with sysprep. I want to install the WDS role to deploy OS's over the network with all the associated software. My first question is does WDS install all the software exe's aswell as the OS and all the relevent drivers. Do I also need to install system centre 2012 and does this come as part of server 2010 or is there an additional cost? Also will I be required to have multiple images or will one do and will the server decide which drivers are needed for each type of machine?
  18. Leasing in schools is a dodgy area. There was something a few years ago that banned some types of lease agreement that schools were partial too. (vague post apologies but I can't remember the ins and outs but it's a googling head start)
  19. Devolved capital should be for IT and site maintenance. It needs to be saved up for a few years to make major changes. I have applied for many many many! grants and received some of the nicest get F%£$ed letters...... 2 avenues for IT funding I have found is Big Lottery fund they will give you up to 10 grand but they expect that you match every donation. The other avenue I found was the Jimmy Saville foundation. They have a massive pot of money that is in no way (barring name) relate to Jimmy Saville, its all money raised by fun runners etc. The money comes through a 3rd party solicitor so no name on your schools bank statement. That said our head just ignored the email when I sent it to him lol. The sad thing is no charity is willing to give any money for Infrastructure costs or IT hardware.
  20. The goal is to remove the libraries from windows explorer. I did this locally by editing the registry item in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}\ShellFolder I think I now understand what needs to happen. The Hive should be HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and the Key path CLSID\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}\ShellFolder is that correct?
  21. I'm struggling to apply an update to an existing registry key. When I check the GPresult it says success. But if I check they key it hasn't changed. When I did this manually before attempting to do it by GPO I had to change the permission on the registry folder to allow local\administrators full control. What user must I set to have full control to allow this change to be made via GPO I tried computer config\windows settings\security settings\registry by adding domain\administrator full control and when I check the registry it has been added to the folder but the key still doesn't change. The domain\administrator has full control and it applies to this key and sub keys. What user must I add with full control to allow group policy to make the change? System is set to full control this key and subkeys Local Admin is set to full control this key and subkeys Anyone any ideas?
  22. prime timetable is ideal for primary schools, I honestly wouldn't look anywhere else I think its £100 a year maybe.
  23. I drilled a hole in the back of remotes and chained them to the white board in one place. Alternatively if you have the same projectors in every room take every remote back in and make teachers sign for them. When lost bill them, when they complain and go to SLT find your Councils equipment care policy and demand that it be adhered to otherwise you will consult your councils whistle-blowers policy. I don't think you would make many friends and you might paint a target on your back though lol.
