Hello guys, I have been looking into a disaster recovery solution for our site. At the moment we backup our virtual servers in the "traditional" way.... to tape, file by file incremental with a weekly full. I have been looking at using VEEAM to back up from our SAN located in the server room to a backup server located at the other end of the school. I believe something like this should be able to host the VEEAM software and store our backups: QNAP TS-879U-RP 24TB 8 Bay Rackmount iSCSI NAS (TS-879U-RP/24TB) - www.misco.co.uk. The obvious weakness is that we are still reliant on our ESXi hosts, also located in the server room. How do people get around this? I was thinking of purchasing a small server, locating it elsewhere and installing ESXi with the idea it can be fired up and our VMs imported from the VEEAM backup in the event of losing both the SAN and the ESXi Hosts. Is this the best way of doing this? If so what sort of compatibility issues might I come across (processor?) Thanks in advance

Hello there, One of our servers has a number of log files in the system32\Logfiles directory, totalling around 8gb. Are they safe to delete? I have attached a screen shot if that helps! Thanks in advance

Hello All, We have the following mount on the wall of one of our offices at the moment: Lindy LCD Wall Bracket (Black) (40721) - www.misco.co.uk According to the specs it has the 100mm x 100mm VESA standard, and holds up to 15kg of weight. In the description it says that it only supports monitors up to 19". Does this mean that we can't mount say this monitor: BenQ United Kingdom | Products - LCD Monitors - GL2450HM Even though it is well under the weight and has the correct mount holes? Hello, I wonder if anyone can provide me with some advice for our projector setup in our main hall. At the moment we have a rear projection setup - which whilst adequate is looking a little dated, and being rear projection lacks sharpness and clarity. Ideally we would like to move to a traditional projection. I think realisticaly we would need someone willing to come to site and have a look before quoting, so we can discuss the options Does anyone know\represent a company that might be willing to help? Hi all, Our reprographics department have been using a tool called "SharpDesk" to combine documents of a different format into one file for printing. We have had issues with this in the past, but now it appears to have given up althogether. Sharp want a silly amount of money to look at it for us, but ideally I would like to use something else I am not adverse to spending a small sum, but I would need to have a free trial first. The only real requirments are that it should be able to work with PDFs, Word Documents and images. Thanks!

Hello there, I have been asked to very tentaively collect some quotes for moving our internet service (and therefore filtering) away from our current service, farmed out by the LEA to a 3rd party. I was wondering which companies other people are using? I would like the option of content filtering included, but also the option to handle our own if needs be. Not a solution to the problem by any means, but you could consider using Picassa. Picassa has a very nice interface (compared the windows default program) and offers the ability to print multiple photos per page etc. It's also relatively easy to push out via GPO

Agreed - sounds like some sort of malware. There is another way to hide\unhide files in Windows.... in the Folder Options screen, uncheck the box that reads Hide Protected Operating System Files (Recommended). Click 'Yes' to the warning, then Apply, then OK. Normally you wouldn't need to do this but its possible a virus has marked your folders as OS protected.

We like to have a text document in the root of the drive with a build version etc. Can be useful if you have a high turnover of images for whatever reason.

Hi there, I am about to become the Network Manager for a School using RMCC4. I come from a Vanilla Windows background and frankly know very little about CC4. Needless to say I want to hit the ground running, but have found almost nothing aside from some forum posts about CC4. My question is this: Is there anything in the way of learning materials (books, e-books, videos) that I can purchase or access? I see RM offer training, but frankly if they don't offer any alternate route to learning the ropes I will have to question working with them in the long term. thanks for your help!

Hi All, I want to create a user account, that amongst other things loads up a desktop with just one Icon on it.... getting the icon there isnt a problem, however because this user account is potentially going to be used across hundreds of machines, whatever rubbish (Adobe Reader, IE, etc) happes to be on the public desktop of that PC also appears. Is there a way to block public icons appearing? Or is there a better way? Thanks!

Thanks for the thoughts so far, I will give them some thought... @Dos_Box - The software is not college wide, I would estimate that 60% of the computers have some form of exams software on them, if not all the packages at once. Another ongoing battle we have with exams is their habbit of using a very wide selection of IT suites to perform the exams, as opposed to limiting themselves to just a couple of rooms that could be managed more easily....

Hello there, I work for a small college, and have been tasked with the problem of how to tackle a growing problem we have with exams software, and more specifically the AD account we use to run them. Here is the current scenario: We run a number of courses, that between them use ~6 different pieces of exam software, some more complex than others, some require internet connectivity, others check for updates every time they are launched and some older apps. need certain administrative privileges or access to the c:\ drive to run. Because of the varied nature and design of these apps. they cannot be ran under a typical "student" account. Instead an exams account is set up which has the correct privileges to run all of the exam apps. In theory, before any exam the exams staff should log each user on using the exams account. What we are finding however is that the exams password is being given out to the students, who are then open to abuse this right by logging in as the exams account at a later date (thus avoiding accountability for misuse). We have tried simply changing the exams password on a regular basis, however this results in frequent AD lock outs, which is a pain considering some of these exams take place after working hours. We have considered implementing a "log on hours" policy for the account, but we don’t believe we can rely on our exams department to be organised enough to make this workable! I can think of a number of ideas that *might* resolve the problems, but I suspect that other colleges\schools will have similar setups and could enlighten me on how they work! Thanks in advance Martin
